This is a paper I wrote to sum up my research paper and product and say thank you to the judges for their time.
306 Madison's Way Waleska, GA 30183 March 20, 2017 Judges, Senior Project Cherokee High School 930 Marietta Hwy. Canton, GA 30114 Dear Judges: My name is Katelyn Beilfuss and I am a senior at Cherokee High School. I am the middle of three children in my household. Growing up, my heart was for two things: the Lord and others. For my future, I plan to continue investing in both of those two subjects. After graduation, I have plans to go to Purdue Northwest. The college is located in Northwest, Indiana. There I will be majoring in Psychology, while continuing my studies in American Sign Language. My biggest goal for my future in education, is to get my Ph.D in psychology and then be able to be a part of the deaf community. Psychology summed up, is the study the brain and the emotions and how they affect our behavior. I wrote my research paper on the causes of depression. Though there are many, I focused on five: the brain’s chemicals, pregnancy, diet, environment, and media. There was many things that I learned but I was surprised by a few things with depression caused by the diet aspect. With diet, depression can come into play when insecurities arise. Also, based on the diet, inflammation in the gut and stomach area can produce serotonin, then metabolic precursors start making neurotoxic chemical and those chemicals are linked to depression. My product was writing a children’s book with parts of all the different emotions in it. Depression is a very common illness among all ages. Researching this helped me to get a basis for my product. I write poem based on my own feelings but this project was different. I had to fully understand an emotion to be able use it properly and know how it can come about. Some of my struggles when I first started out was that I knew the emotions so well, my mind was so wrapped in the emotion itself I could not write a story. My original plan was to write individual stories on each emotion. Since I was so educated, I lost the ability to be creative and reach the feeling of the reader. After many struggles, I sat down and just wrote ideas. Sooner or later, I had a story. With that, the emotions flowed right in. I think that through researching depression I have a better understanding of it and how it affects many people around me and through the community. Through writing my book, I feel I can relate to others better. I now have the ability to use what I know about emotions and put it into a situation. Doing this, it has grown an even deeper desire to study this subject. I learned that this is something I really want to purse. I also learned I want to go into the clinical side of it, and be able to talk to people. Senior Project was a lot of work. It gave me lots of responsibility, and many deadlines to dread. I think senior project is a good thing because it gives seniors the opportunity to really dive into what they “thought” they wanted to do after high school. I, personally, want to thank each and every one of you for taking the time to come out and listen to me. I want to thank you for what you are doing in the community and wanting to help out the seniors. Sincerely, Katelyn Beilfuss Katelyn Beilfuss
