My name is Julia Kennard. For my senior project I chose to redesign a bedroom. I chose interior design because I have always had a passion for design and creative expression. Also, I am the type of person who is very influenced by my surroundings, so I really enjoy creating comfortable and appealing spaces. The bedroom that I am redecorating is a bedroom in a friend’s grandmother’s home. The home was intended to be a room for her granddaughter to stay in when visiting but over the years turned into more of a storage room. It was a wonderful candidate for a room makeover.
My product is a completed, redesigned bedroom. The bedroom style that I decided on with my facilitator was a blend of the Scandinavian and bohemian design that I had researched for my paper. The bedroom incorporates many different bright colors, textures, and patterns. These are balanced by the incorporation of whites and blacks, as well as the addition of many plants and greenery. I did not encounter any significant challenges throughout this process. The only slight difficulty I had was adapting to the limitations I had received from the home’s occupant. I was asked not to paint the walls or put any holes in the walls, so I had to get creative with some of my ideas for the room’s design.
I researched the various styles of interior design while particularly focusing on residential design and how it has shifted and transformed over the decades. I researched the different styles of residential design and their distinct charactersitics. These styles included Scandinavian, Mid-Century Modern, Bohemian, and Nautical. I learned how the times and desires of residents changed and how the design styles have adapted and changed as well. I also learned of the frequent resurgence of interior design techniques of previous eras and the roles that they play in today’s interior design.
There are a number of different interior design careers that specialize in different styles. These may include corporate interior design, bathroom design, exhibit design, and health care interior design. The interior design that I practiced taught me much about patience and overcoming the sense of being overwhelmed. I underestimated the difficulty and the length of the task and believed that I was way in over my head, even with the guidance of my facilitator. I was forced to learn the importance of sticking to my instinct and making choices with confidence. Having no prior experience with interior design, however, I feel as though the completion of my product was a great success. I learned so much from my facilitator, such as sketching design plans, balance and functionality, proper décor placement, and use of colors and textures. I had estimate costs, remain within a designated budget and also really exercise my communication skills by working together with the home’s occupant. I plan to attend the University of Georgia in the fall and while I am very much interested in interior design as a hobby, I have realized that I do not wish to study it in college and pursue it as my career.
The process of redesigning this bedroom provided me a great outlet for my creativity and as a result I realized how much I truly enjoy interior design. I am very glad that I chose this subject for my senior project. Thank you for your time.
