Hello, my name is Jonathan Torgerson, I am a little younger than most at 17. I stated early going straight into 1st grade. Once I graduate an am joining the Navy. After finishing my time in the Navy, I hope to start a small garage to restore classic cars. Because of my dream to one day own a garage I chose to restore my current vehicle to a better condition than when purchased.
Mechanical engineering the topic I chose for my essay cover a lot of the areas of expertise need for my future career goals. The main topic researched was the history of automotive advancement. Many people don’t understand the feats of automotive excellence achieved back in the 40’s and 50’s. They had car that were setting new land speed records at 3 and 400 mph. These little-known facts about history are what pushes me to learn more about the automotive industry.
At first my product was going to be a rebuilt 1986 Pontiac Firebird 5.0 but, because of ill treatment and shrugged off maintenance the engine sadly seized because of an oil pump break. However, I managed to afford a new vehicle which is a 1998 jeep Cherokee. This vehicle when bought was in rough condition but ran well. The inside was in bad repair and need a lot of time and money to repair.
Later in life when I get out of the navy I am wanting to start my own small business as a car restoration expert. In this business I will be doing engine rebuilds and body restoration as well as interior restoration. Over the course of this project I have learned that time management and planning for the worst is the most vital step in planning your project. The biggest challenge for me was that about half way through my project my first car broke down and was unfixable so I had to sell it. I then went 2 months without a vehicle. That severely restricted my work on the project. Eventually I bought a new jeep and have finished restoring it.
Senior project has in a sense, helped me see the need for better time management. However the project has put loads of stress on my back to meet deadlines as well as find people to mentor your actions. It has cost me close 2000 dollars in supplies as well as a new car. That number is only to date. I still have over 1000 dollars to pay off on my new car. So personally this project has made senior year very long stressful and ruff for myself to complete. Thank you for your time.
