CALM: Career and Life Management 2016-2017 Semester 1 Teacher: Mr. Sharek Email: Jonathan.Sharek@ecsd.net Philosophy and Rationale: The aim of CALM is to empower students to make well informed, meaningful, and considered decisions and choices in all aspects of their lives. CALM helps to develop behaviors and attitudes that contribute to the well-being and respect of self and others now and in the future. General Learner Expectations: 1. Personal Choices Students will apply an understanding of the emotional/psychological, intellectual, social, spiritual, and physical dimensions of health and the dynamic interplay of these factors in managing personal well-being. 2. Resource Choices Students will make responsible decisions in the use of finances and other resources that reflect personal values and goals, and demonstrate commitment to self and others. 3. Career and Life Choices Students will develop and apply processes for managing personal and lifelong career development Reference Materials There is no designated textbook for CALM. Many of the resources will be provided in class. There will also be a variety of guest presentations throughout the semester. Credit Requirements: All high school students must take CALM to receive an Alberta High School Diploma. Assessment: Reflections: 40% - These are required and will follow film or guest speaker presentations. Assignments: 60% (notes/projects/major assignments) A wide range of assessment pieces are used in the development of a student’s final grade. Note: Students attending St. Francis Xavier may be assessed zeros for incomplete work. CLASS POLICIES Absences: Absences will significantly affect a student’s mark in this class. Any student who has three absences will receive a call home from me. At six absences, the grade coordinator also contacts home to address the attendance issue. Upon nine absences, the student is removed from the class. Excusable Absences: Illness, appointments (with doctor/guardian verification), hospitalization, funeral/bereavement. Late to Class: Do not be late. Arriving late for class could result in lost marks on quizzes and tests - thus a lower grade. After Class Help/Flex Block: My goal in this course is to help students succeed. I will be available through email, during Flex Block (in the music room). Right to Learn: In this class, all students have the right to learn. To do so means that everyone works toward creating a climate that is positive and productive. No student has the right to choose behaviour that infringes upon the rights of others. Cell Phones (Mobile Devices): Mobile devices are not to be used by students during instructional time. If a mobile device is identified by the teacher, the student understands that he/she will be required to forfeit his/her mobile device to a secured location. However, the teacher is not responsible for lost/stolen devices. To avoid lost/stolen mobile devices, students should always store their devices in their lockers or backpacks. The teacher is not responsible for lost/stolen devices. To Parents & Students: This course outline has been posted in Powerschool and Mr. Sharek’s website. I will be going over this thoroughly in the first week of the semester. It is assumed that both parents & students are aware of the expectations and guidelines of CALM.
