One way childhood programs can be grouped is by a family child care home or center-based program. These two forms of care are very different in that a family child care home is more flexible and is greatly limited in the number of children that can be cared for in a home. The children are usually younger in age (infants or toddlers), they are based in a home setting and the quality of care is lower than that of a center-based program. A center-based program is found in school location, they are able to accommodate larger groups of children (based on age) and they are usually preschool aged.
In North Carolina, the rules are different in that a family child care home is allowed a maximum of five preschool aged children or less than nine if three or more are school-aged. The number of children allowed in a center-based program is based on the footage indoors and outdoors of the facility as well as fire and sanitation inspections and zoning requirements.
In Henderson County there are many facilities listed including a Head Start program called Calvary Episcopal Head Start located on Highway 25 Fletcher, North Carolina. There is a five star licensed child care center named Even Start Preschool at Bruce Drysdale located at 834 North Main Street in Hendersonville. A family child care home can be found at Big Willow Preschool and Day Care on 151 Big Willow Road in Hendersonville. There is a non-profit child care center called Open Arms Early Childhood Development Center at 2606 Chimney Rock Road in Hendersonville, and a for-profit child care center called Blessed Beginnings 73 Arthur Major Lane in Hendersonville.
In an ideal child care program offered for children ages three and four years of age there would be low child to adult ratio of no more than four to five kids for every adult, and no more than ten children in a classroom with two teachers. The children would have a wide variety of activities available to them based on their interests and personality. There would be equal time indoors and outdoors creating a great environment. It would offer opportunity for children to learn by experiments and free play. With a lower child to adult ratio, there would be more time for one on one interaction working with each child daily. You would hear laughter and singing as well as a time for quiet and peace during the day. To make the environment one of top quality, you must have a well trained staff, parents who are willing to engage the children at home and a facility that provides a wide variety of tools and supplies needed for each session needed to teach the children.
Of the items listed in the summary that contribute to the quality childhood education, I would say the developmental appropriateness of the program is most important. If you are not using materials and curriculum that is for the proper age, the child would be lost or bored with their time in the center. They would also not be properly prepared for future age levels and what would be expected of them to be able to handle academically or developmentally.
