My facilitator and I were talking about what song I should direct for my men’s choir. My facilitator, Dr.Dennis McIntire, was showing me songs that would be entertaining and great for a good men’s choir. We listened to five songs, and one song really stood out there that I enjoyed the most.
When I met with Dr.McIntire, I was excited to start working with him. In my mind, I was thinking to myself that I really have a great facilitator, and nobody at Etowah can possibly top my facilitator’s job. I am proud to be working with a retired dean of Reinhardt School of Music. I was also excited that he could talk to me about the world of conducting and his experience as a choral conductor.
I am talking to my facilitator to figure out what song I should conduct and make plans to meet. I am both excited and nervous to start this process.
I ordered my song that I was going to direct after my meeting with Dr.McIntire. I paid extra for two day delivery, and guess what? It was worth it. It came in on Friday afternoon, and when I received it started to look at the music, and I began to mark my music. The song that I ordered was Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening arranged by Randall Thompson.
I was excited. I could not wait to show this to my high school chorus teacher Mr. Hall. Also, I had this good feeling that the men’s choir at Etowah will enjoy the piece. It is difficult finding a good piece for a choir. If you find a good piece that the choir stays really focus on, it means that you had a good pick. It also tells you that you know your choir really well.
I opened up the packet, which the song came in, and guess what was inside? You guess it; my choral piece. I was extremely happy that the music came in!

Activity: I took some time listening to this piece, so I could write and mark what is important in this song. During the hour, I looked up the meaning of this text. This song was actually a poem by Robert Frost, so I wanted to read up on thoughts by some literature teachers, and see their views on this poem. Many people said it could be about death because it was about the wintertime.
Commentary: I made sure that I circle dynamics in this song and tempo changes in this song because it changed from a 4/4 to a 6/8 time signature. I was thinking in my head I hope I can get that transition right with the tempo. Lastly, I marked the notes in the music, and I numbered my measures.
Listening to this incredible guy’s piece by Randall Thompson. When I was listening this song, I had goosebumps because it was so beautiful.
I was studying every part in this song. This song is TTB (Tenor 1, Tenor 2, and Bass), so I had to learn three person parts. I was practicing a lot for every part. I was counting aloud, and playing parts together at the same time to get the movement of the men parts correctly. Lastly, the best part of the song is it had a lot of repetition, so nothing really did not change except for the middle verse of the song.
I was thinking in my head, I hope I do not screw up during third period men’s choir when I am playing their parts. This process was time consuming. I wanted to make everything perfect because I want to make my experience of conducting fun. When I was playing the parts, I noticed at the very end of the song there was an acappela section.
I was studying every person’s part in this song. It took a long time to learn the parts. When I was playing the parts, I was so excited that each verse had the same notes, and nothing changed. I was glad that I picked this song because it was easy to learn.
I was supposed to meet with my PF, but we had some conflicts on that day, so we decided to talk on the phone. On November 11, I gave him the song, and we both looked at it. He told me how to approach the song, and we discussed on Wednesday we should meet to start directing.
I was really excited that we are slowly about to start this directing process with him. Also, I was so happy that I was able to discuss the music about this song. I hope the men’s choir will enjoy it.
After school, I was talking to my project facilitator on the phone. We were both talking about the song and what parts we should look at during my first run. I was happy that we talked about the song, because I had some questions to ask for him.
Activity: My facilitator gave me a CD track of choral music by Randall Thompson. We took some time to listen to the song, which I was directing, and we were talking about what choir did in the recording. We also talked about the transition to 4/4 and 6/8 time signature.
When I was listening to the song, I mentioned to my facilitator on how the choir can sing soft dynamics. Also, how should I practice the tempo changes and what should I first say to my choir when we first start the song.
I got a CD, so my choir can listen to the next day. When I got the CD, we listen to the song, and my facilitator told me, do not make any noise, just listen to the music. When I was listening to the CD, I was so excited that I picked a good song.
On this day, I was conducting my song. I was conducting with the track, and I was not so great at it because it was my first day. My facilitator told me how to conduct a 4/4 and a 6/8 pattern, and my homework every night was to practice those patterns. We decided to meet every Wednesday night, so we can discuss on how I am improving, and we broke the song into sections to practice on each week.
I was nervous to conduct in front of somebody who knows his stuff and has been doing this for all of his life. The first thought was going through my head was I hope every musician was not so great for their first time of conducting, so I can join the club.
I was conducting for my very first time in my life. I was nervous at first, but I will get the hang out of it.
This is my first time conducting with the Men’s choir! I did a straight run the first time to see where I am at with conducting. In addition, I played the Randall Thompson CD for them. It is always a good start to let the choir to listen a song before you start digging into a piece of music.
I was a little bit nervous when Mr. Hall looked at me, and he said John it is time for you to conduct. I was thinking in my head, I hope that the Men’s Choir does not think I am bad at this.
I am conducting the Men’s Choir for the first time, and I am excited and nervous. I was thinking in my head, I hope that the guys don’t think I am bad at this.
On this day, the choir and I focused on the acapella section of the song, which is the last verse. I focused on trying not to move my hand when I was doing the acapella section because if I make movement, the choir would think I am cueing them to sing.
It was hard trying not to make any movement. When I was practicing with my facilitator, he wanted me to make movement, and now my chorus teacher want me to do something else. I guess both of them was taught differently with different teachers.
I was conducting the acapella section of Stopping by the Woods. It was such a nice ending section. I was happy that we were working on this part; I really needed to focus on this part because I did not have any accompanist helping me.
2 Hrs and 30 mins
On this day, my chorus teacher decided to have an afternoon rehearsal to practice with the accompanist, and with myself conducting by myself and with the choir. We focused on the entrances of some parts, the 6/8 transition to a 4/4 transition, and the acapella section again.
On this day, I did a great job, and my chorus teacher knew that I am ready for the concert. There was still some parts though I had trouble with the accompanist, but it did not affect the song.
I was practicing for the concert, and trying to get prepared. My experience with this choir is almost done. Just one week left until the concert, and I am so excited.
1 Hr and 30 mins
Activity Concert day! I finally finished with my conducting experience, and everyone in that room, loved my songs. I got many good compliments, and everyone was happy with me, including the singers.
I was so happy that I finished this project! I was happy how far I have come with this conducting experience.
This was my Last time conducting this amazing choir. I had so much conducting; I am so glad that I got to work with this amazing group of guys. I was so excited that I finished my Senior Project. ng about what choir did in the recording. We also talked about the transition to 4/4 and 6/8 time signature.
On this day, I did a great job, and my chorus teacher knew
