My name is John Pawlenko. For my Senior Project, I conducted the Etowah Men’s Choir. My goal for my Senior Project is learning how to conduct because when I go to college, I am going to be studying music. When I go to college, I will be taking conducting classes in college, and since I am learning to conduct, it will increase my learning curve. When I graduate college, I plan to be a middle school or high school chorus teacher after I am done with school at Reinhardt University.
The class that I took, to me help me get prepared for college, and the outside world was chorus. I took chorus for all four years of high school and I will never regret taking the class. The class prepared me so much in sight-reading, improving my voice, how to prepare for auditions, and believe it or not, it even helped with my Senior Project. When I took chorus, I achieved so many awards and accomplishments that was worth my time doing. One thing I liked about this class, I got the chance to meet so many professors from different colleges. When the professors came in, they talked to us what their music school would be like, and subjects and instruments would be helpful for us in the music field. Also, just joining chorus it made me enjoy music so much that I decided to do some extracurricular activities.
Outside of school, I got involved with a lot of extracurricular activities and community service that was music involved. I was part of Canton First UMC Church choir and The Cherokee Chorale. I met with both groups every Monday and Wednesday nights. When I joined my church choir, got the experience working with a different conductor instead of my high school chorus teacher. Just being with church choir, it helped me with what is like being with another director and how I can settle being with that director. Also, when I joined the Chorale, which it was an audition group, I got to spend some time with amazing conductors, and they shared with all the singers what got them into music. These choirs prepared me so much for the outside world, it also made me a better singer and professional singer. Lastly, with both of choirs, it helped me with my community service which was worth it. For my extracurricular activities, I got involved with piano and voice lessons. I take the lessons at Ken Stanton Music, and my time there was highly worth it. It made my learning curve in my stretch into a better musician. Both lessons helped me out with music auditions, sight-reading, and getting prepared to take music classes in college. The one instrument that directors highly recommend students taking was piano which I did. Learning the piano helped me a lot with AP Music Theory and helping me get prepared for my college piano class I will take in college.
Just being part of chorus really stretched out my music skills, and it really made me a musically talented student. Chorus got me involved to be a part of the community, honor choirs, and extracurricular activities. I can really say that being in chorus was worth my time doing, and I can’t wait to see what my future has in store. Lastly, chorus is something I think every person should do because it makes you get involved with so many things that is worth doing.
