Modern Day Policing: Training and Tactics
Hi, I'm John Benz I attend Cherokee High School as a graduating Senior
My project was a leadership and skills acquired based project in the Law Enforcement Career field
I decided to do my research paper on the issues with modern day policing
My goal for the research paper was to educate myself on the arising conflicts with policing in local communities. These issues could come from lack of training to public relations issues
My Senior Project was in the career field of Law Enforcement where I hoped to developed leadership skills and acquire different levels of training. I was partnered with Lt. Mathew Halstead who works with the Cherokee County Sheriffs Office as a Reserve Deputy. He also is a Tech Sergeant at the Dobbins Air Reserve Base where he is E.O.D. (Explosive Ordnance Disposal).
How I was Trained
After a few meetings with Halstead we decided that the best way for me to gain knowledge of my desired career field was through the explorers. Lt. Halstead was the mentor/advisor for the small group of explorers. I would be trained and taught everything Halstead and a few other deputies knew and learned from their years of experience on the job
Building Clearing and Active Shooter
Traffic Stops and High Risk Traffic Stop
Felony Traffic Stop
Pepper Spray/Pepper gel
Simple Pressure Points
Crime Scene Investigation
Use of force
How I Hoped to Accomplish My Goals
I originally planned to attend every training session with an end goal of entering two teams into the Cobb County Explorer Competition. When me and Lt. Halstead finally got the paper work in we found out our spots had been taken. This was a bit of a disappointment for me but it did not affect my knowledge gained and skills acquired from the training that the sheriffs deputies taught me.
This was a learning stretch for me because I lacked the knowledge of what Law Enforcement was really like. I lacked experience in many of the necessary fields for being a well trained and put together officer.
Throughout this training process it became clear that if I wanted to be a good leader and help my fellow officers better their skills and knowledge that I had to not only be a good leader by making tough and fast decisions that my team would follow and have confidence in, but also asking my teammates for help in making a decision and having clear communication with each other. I also realized that being a Police Officer is a lot more than writing tickets and paper work, they do so much behind the scenes that not everyone sees whether its helping mediate between a married couple that ’s arguing on a domestic call or helping a mother search for her lost child.
College and Career
I am accepted and going to attend The University of North Georgia and study Criminal Justice and hopefully graduate with a Bachelors Degree
I plan on working for a state agency like The Department of Public Safety or a local Sheriffs Office for about 25 years and be able to retire with full benefits in my 40's
Traffic Control at Guns and Hoses 5k
In this photo my fellow explorer and I are standing in the road way directing traffic away from the runners.
This night was interesting because we where able to go inside the Cherokee County Jail. Although I was not able to take photos inside the jail I was allowed to take this picture of us walking from the control room to one of the towers.
Training in the Shoot House
We had the privilege to train in the C.S.O. SWAT teams shoot house. Which is setup to simulate close quarters combat. This was to train us on weapon skills and handling. We where trained to clear different sized rooms all to best ensure officer safety and that the principals of team movement where met and accomplished fluently.
