Senior Capstone Career Project - Product Work Log
Name: Jarrad Goodoien
Product: Underground Irrigation System
Date, Time, & Location:
1/8/17,3:00-5:00, and Facilitator’s House
Activity: Went to Facilitator’s house and discussed the cost of the product, the design of the irrigation system, and time table to work on the product.
Commentary: My facilitator and I talked about who would pay for the supplies for the product. Keith said he would pay for all the supplies, because he would be profiting off the installation. We also spent some time drawing up some blueprints of the design. Keith explained, why he placed certain components of the system in certain places. We talked about when the best dates to work on the install. But, the dates are subject to change due to the weather. We both agreed to wait until the weather starts to warm up to start, because we are going to be working outside.
Time Spent: Two Hours
Total Time Thus Far: Two Hours
2/4/17,11am-1pm, SiteOne Landscape Supply
Activity: Went to a landscape supply store to look at prices of supplies, and ask questions about the varied sizes of pipes and fittings.
Commentary: I went to the company where my facilitator normally buys his supplies from and talked to employees about why there are so many different sizes of pipes and what each are used for. I also just hung around and saw what other irrigation companies were buying and for what reason.

Date, Time, & Location:
3/4/17, 10:00 am- 2:00 pm, Various Homes Around Atlanta
Activity: Today, I worked with Keith doing everyday service to irrigation systems. We thought it would be a clever idea to get me some experience in the field, before jumping into the installation. We did routine starts and maintenance to peoples existing systems. I think I gained a lot of knowledge about how to maintain and service irrigation systems.
Commentary: Instead of going start into my product, Keith and I did some basic irrigation work to help me understand the procedure of irrigation.
Time Spent: 4 Hours
4/1/2017, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM, Job Site in Suwanee, GA
Activity: Today, I worked with my facilitator on an install for a distribution warehouse. I helped him put in sleeves, which is where you put a larger pipe to protect a smaller pipe under pavement. Also, I helped install some pipe and values.
Commentary: I got a lot of training today, on how you should properly install an irrigation system. I learned that for sleeving pipe, the outer pipe must be twice the size of the pipe inside. I also learned how to properly glue together pipe and install heads.
Time Spent: 9 Hours
Total Time Thus Far: 17 Hours
4/2/2017,7:00 AM- 4:00 PM, House in Vinings, GA
Activity: Today, my facilitator and I started working on my final product with some help from his employees. First, we had to hook into the city water to supply the system with water. After that, we started digging the ditches for the pipe and wire. I learned how to properly clean up the ditch, which means making the ditch level and free of rocks. We worked on the front yard and installed four values. We didn’t put many off the heads in yet, because the yard wasn’t leveled yet
Commentary: I learned a lot today, it was great learning experience. I learned how to tie into city water. In the pictures take you will notice black pipe sticking up, that is where the heads will be installed. While trenching, we had to be aware of underground power and water going to the house.
Total Time Thus Far: 26 Hours
4/8/17,7:00-5:00, Various Homes Around Atlanta
Activity: Today, we did service calls and repairs. At the first stop, we had to repair the main line due to a tree falling onto the pipe. We also had to repair drip tube because of the same tree. At the second house, we had to add one head to an area where the water wasn’t reaching from other heads.
Commentary: Today was a difficult day due to having to hand dig all the repairs and pipe we added. It showed me how exhausting it is to work in the Georgia heat. But, after hearing how much money he charged for doing all the work made it worth it.
Time Spent: 10 Hours
Total Time Thus Far: 36 Hours
4/9/17,7:00-2:00, House in Vinings, GA
Activity: Today, we finished the installation of the underground irrigation system. All we had to do was add the heads to the existing pipe we stubbed up and bring the wires to the controller. The finished product was very satisfying to see.
Commentary: I learned how to put heads into the ground and how to properly set them to water what is needed. We also had to install the controller and make sure all the zones where working.
