My name is Jarett Ashley and for my senior project I did a restoration project on a 12ft Jon boat. My goals for this project were to further advance my mechanical skills and learn a lot more about boats. I chose to restore a boat because I thought it would be a fun project and I’d also have a nice boat to fish from when I was done. It was a really great project which I felt I learned a lot from and had a lot of fun doing.
For my research paper I wrote about the environmental and economic impact of recreational bass fishing. It discusses how fisherman purchase fishing licenses and the money from the licenses go right back into conserving lakes and streams. It also addresses how fisherman are more prone to take care of the lakes and rivers because fishing is their passion and they want the fish to be there forever. Fisherman want their children to enjoy their passion so they will attempt to conserve the sport as best as they can. I learned a lot about the impact fisherman have because I never thought about how fisherman pump so much money into the economy by purchasing all the expensive equipment needed to fish.
The boat I purchased was a very old 12ft aluminum Jon boat for $175. The boat was in very rough condition and I knew I had a lot of work ahead of me. I saw holes in the boat and I saw rust and old paint but I saw potential through it all. Now after all the work I turned a $175 piece of aluminum into a respectable fishing boat that I will have many great fishing excursions from. My product relates to my research paper because to fish from the boat I will have to purchase a license, rods, lures and many other things to make my trip a success. All this money I have spent gets pumped back into the economy and helps the conservation of the lakes I am fishing.
My boat and research paper are both tied into wildlife conservation. What I would really like to do when I get older is to be a game warden. A game warden is like a wildlife cop, they check and make sure everybody has their hunting and fishing license on them and that they are not breaking any laws. I plan on attending Florida State University in the fall and double majoring in criminology and environmental science. This path will lead me right into being a game warden.
I had a really great time restoring this boat and it really solidified my interests of becoming a game warden. I believe that all future generations deserve to enjoy fishing as I have. Thank you for taking the time to listen to me.
