My name is Braxton Swanson and I am a senior at Cherokee high school. My passion is all things baseball from the game to how to care for a field. I wanted to make my senior project to where I could work with the things I love but also learn some of the ways to take the care of a baseball field to the next level. I wanted to learn what it really took to take field care to the next level but also improve our own high school field. Raking the dirt and keeping everything clean is a big part but I wanted to experience a bigger project that needs to be done to really know what it takes.
In my research paper I researched the ends and outs of keeping a baseball field in good condition. I researched how to care for the dirt, grass, and any other parts of a field that may need some love and care. In this research I learned things such as here are two types of grass that you can plant depending on you climate and the time of the year. I learned various dragging techniques for the infield dirt. All crucial parts to keeping a nice and safe field.
My product war replacing a worn part of grass in front of the pitcher’s mound with new sod. Originally I was going to purchase new sod and lay it down, but with the help and advice from Tim Bailey it was decided that it would be best to transplant some of the outfield grass into the wore spot to ensure we had the right grass and that the grass would grow. This is one of the techniques that I actually come across during my research. That was the only real setback I occurred during my project. My research helped a tremendous amount in installing the grass and then showing me how to care for it to ensure it survives.
One career that I have often thought about pursing is a baseball coach. I know a about baseball and how the game is played but needed to know more about how to take care of a field if I ever wanted to be a coach. Through this project I learned critical information about ways to care for a field. Another thing I discovered is that I really enjoy working on fields. There is something about it that is relaxing and brings me joy.
The senior project really opened my eyes to how to take care of a baseball field, and I picked up many life lessons that I will have. Thank you for your time.
