It was the night of Halloween. Jack and James were getting into their costumes at Jack’s house. Jack Was a baseball player and James was a tennis player. When they were ready they went out the door into the dark scary night.
The first house they visited was Miss. Jade, one of James Moms’ friends, and they got wonderfully delicious candy. So the they went to door to door having a good old time. As their bags were getting quite full, they decided to finish off at Ms. Gamey’s house and it was the right choice. Or was it?
First, they knocked on her door. Ms. Gamey answered and said, “Hello do you want some candy?” James and Jack both replied, “Yes, Please!” Ms. Gamey looked at them and smiled as she said, “Take as many pieces as you would like. I never get visitors anyway.” James and Jack looked at each other and said, “Okay! Thanks”! “No problem,” said Ms. Gamey. So, when Jack and James headed home they thought of an idea. And not just any idea… a BIG idea. But little did they know what was about to happen.
Their Idea was to keep dressing up in different costumes and ring Ms. Gamey’s doorbell. Their goal was to get a lot more candy out of the old woman. “Okay, here’s the plan,” said Jack. “We change over there by that huge pine tree, the one that stood lonesome in Miss Jade’s backyard.” James was thinking and with his hand on his chin, he looked up at Jack and asked, “Where are we going to get the money for this and how are we going to get brand new costumes? It is late and most cool outfits are probably sold out.” Jack looked at him confidently. He replied, “Here, I know what to do. We can go in my room to get all of my old Halloween costumes.”
“You really think this is going to work”? asked James.
Jack responded, “James, if I did not think this was going to work, do you think I’d actually have us go through with it? Come on! It’s Halloween night and it’s supposed to be both fun and scary.”
“You’re right,” said James. “Let’s get started.”
“That’s what I thought” said Jack. “Okay, let’s go trick Ms. Gamey and treat ourselves to a bunch of candy!”
So, Jack and James went to go to Jack’s room and he got every single costume except for the little ones that no longer fit. Jack just threw those in a pile and told himself that they could be donated to charity. So, their plan was underway and seemed like it was going to actually work.
So, Jack and James changed into another set of costumes and knocked on Ms. Gamey’s door. She answered. She said, “Wow! More children! This is the most trick-or-treaters; I have had in twenty-three years”! “ She proceeded to put some wrapped pieces of chocolate bars into each of their bags. “Enjoy,” she said as she shut the door.
Jack and James noticed they received a bunch of candy from the old lady. They guessed because she thought that was the end of her trick-or-treaters for this year but, she was wrong! A lot more people came to her door or so Ms. Gamey thought. The poor woman still had no idea that it was Jack and James playing their tricks again. Jack and James started to get tired so they decided to change into one final costume. However, since they were tired, their brains weren’t working as well as they usually did. They started to wear the same costume over and over again. Once, Jack even forgot to put his mask on, which exposed his entire face to Ms. Gamey.
.Jack and James rang the doorbell for the final time. When Ms. Gamey opened the door, she had a puzzled look on her face. She stared at them and asked, “Wait! Didn’t you already come to my house”?
Her sweet, innocent looking face suddenly turned into one of narrowing, evil eyes and her skin started to wrinkle like a prune. She began to cackle in a loud voice. She started to run out the door after them with a broom.
The two looked at each other and the shock of Ms. Gamey figuring out who they were, frightened them. They ran away when James said, “I think we lost her.”
The two boys went over to Jack’s house. They figured they were safe and began to dump out their stash of candy. Little did they realize she knew exactly who the two boys were and where each of them lived.
She stopped in front of Jack’s house and thought how this could be a fun night for her. “Heck,” she thought, “this might be the most fun I’ve had in years.” She let out another creepy cackle. She headed home and her witch costume on and as she flew out the door, she howled with laughter, “Here I come to avenge you to boys.”
Ms. Gamey walked up the front stoop to Jack’s house and rang the doorbell. Jack said, “Hey Mom, can you get that? James and I are trading candy.” He didn’t hear a response and when the bell rang a second time, he remembered that she was taking his younger sister out with her friends for the night. So Jack looked at James and said, “I better get that. I’ll be right back so don’t even think about hoarding my candy, dude.”
James let out a sarcastic laugh just as Jack opened the door. Then he heard Jack let out an enormous shrill of horror. He slammed the door and raced up the stairs. He shouted, “James, we have to jump out my window. That Gamey woman is here and she is one big freak. We made a huge mistake by going to her house. I don’t know what she wants, but I don’t want to find out either.”
Jack and James quickly crawled out the window, jumped on the roof above the back porch and made a jump to the backyard. Ms. Gamey seemed to be reading their minds as she stood there waiting for them with broomstick in hand. She glared at them and shouted, “Get me your parent!”
Jack gulped said “Yes Ma’am.”
Then Jack remembered his mother wasn’t home. He glanced at Jack to do something but just as he was about to tell Ms. Gamey that his mom was out trick-or-treating with his sister, his mom appeared in the driveway. She looked startled and asked, “Why is Ms. Gamey from down the street here and all dressed up in a witch’s costume?”
Ms, Gamey said, “I will tell you why. Your son and his buddy here decided to come to my house not once, not twice, but at least ten times! They dressed up in different costumes each time so they could get all my candy. Then your son here forgot to wear his mask on one of his trips over here. I thought something was off because I never get any visitors and suddenly this year I did.”
Jack’s mother was very disappointed in her son’s behavior and told both boys to apologize to Ms. Gamey for their prank. She told James to get his candy from Jack’s room and to head home for the night. She also walked Ms. Gamey back to her house to make sure she arrived safely. She thanked Jack’s mother for seeing her home and said, “Ya know, I may be old, but I still ain’t a fool. I hope I scared those boys straight.” Jack’s mother smiled and said, “Oh, I am sure you did, Ms. Gamey. They are good boys, but they both know better than to scare someone like that.”
Ms. Gamey said, “I have to admit, though, this was the most fun I’ve had in years.” Tell the boys thanks for the trick.”
Jack’s mom turned and said, “I will and they thank you for the treats.” They both laughed and Ms. Gamey went to bed and Jack’s mom headed home.
Jack thought to himself, “Why did I do this”? When his mother came home, she knew her son regretted what he did and decided that she would just let him learn his lesson.
James went to bed and thought the same thing. Both James and Jack learned a lesson that day: it was to never do bother Ms. Gamey again or you could get tricked by the very ones who treat you.
Jack and James remained friends and as years passed, they told their kids what happened that Halloween night. Legend has it that this story continues to be told throughout both family generations—until the end of time…
