Mathematics (Maybe Computer science)
From map reading whilst walking over hills in the countryside (as part of Silver Duke of Edinburgh), through to reading sheet music, I have noticed that mathematics is a part of so many diverse aspects of life.
Since completing my first United Kingdom Mathematics Trust Challenge in 2014,I gained a higher level of curiosity for some aspects of the mathematics I anticipated I would be learning about a part of the A2 Maths in the sixth form.
This led me to take two weeks of work experience in an investment bank in central London (UBS) where I learned lots about the behind the scenes activities of a large investment bank. I also opted to do work experience with another charity in Cornwall in Year 12 which saw me developing digital marketing strategies including web integrations. This helped me to look at problems in a more structured way and apply some of the basics I have been taught in class to real life situations.
Following this I elected to help some of my school mathematics teachers with their lower school classes. This was a great experience as I got to use my skills to help teach them about some of the topics I had previously learned, which I noticed re-inforced my own learning and understanding. I therefore found this personally very rewarding as, whilst not only developing wider skills for me, such as time keeping and organisation, it also allowed me to help broaden the
Taking both Mathematics and Further Mathematics at A level has given me a stronger understanding of mathematics and has led me to pursue outside reading of the subject, including some more abstract books such as ‘The Simpsons and their mathematical secrets’ which revealed how complex maths can be yet still be hidden in plain sight. Other books such as ‘The music of the primes’ and ‘Fermat’s last theorem’ have given me.
I am grateful that I have had the opportunities to develop skills such as teamwork and responsibility by being an active part of my National Citizenship Service team as part of setting up a charity for dementia care homes. Whilst we were out on the streets developing our community action programme, I was honored to be leading the team in making sure that we invested everything we possibly could back into the community.
Having the opportunity to be elected by the school staff to become both a Yr 11 prefect and subsequently year 12 house captain in my school has meant I have been able to fully commit to wider aspects of school life, and give more back to the school community as well.
This has given me opportunities to be involved in presenting in assemblies, hosting enterprise days to raise money for charities and helping to support the house during competitions in school.
Whilst managing my school schedule, I have also been fully committed outside school in my local church. I have led worship by playing guitar on several occasions, and have been leading the Audio-Visuals team for over two years. This has allowed me to further develop both my technology and management skills. As well as be the person responsible or in-charge, I have also had the opportunity to work alongside and lead people in all different professions and of all ages.
My early enthusiasm and passion for mathematics, combined with all of the experiences mentioned above has led me to want to carry on a career in mathematics after university and I am most looking forward studying the different types of calculus. This is a topic which intrigued me the most at A level, and let me to complete a research project including some of the history of calculus.
