Construction of loose stone check dams prevented soil erosion and settled sediments in cash for assets activities under WFP/SDC funded project.
Figure 1 View of village Kohi & check damsVillage Kohi, Tehsil Salarzai, Bajaur is situated below a mountainous range of Kohi Hindukush. A heavy rain associated with severe thunderstorm hit the nearby mountains in moon soon 2014 due to which the erosion and formation of new gullies initiated in the mountainous range. Since then the damages due to flash floods increased in the village. Due to frequently occurring flash floods in moon soon 120 Kanal agriculture land, 400 Kanal forest land, 1440 fuel wood trees, 5 water ponds, 20 hand dug wells, 50 wheat straw ricks, two mosques and a graveyard are at risk to flash floods.
To mitigate the damaging effects of flash floods HUJRA targeted the village for DRR initiatives. Upon recommendation from Village Disaster Management Committee (VDMC) in first month of the project 42 check dams constructed on two main Gullies.
The participants of the schemes, members of VDMC reported “We were not aware of the benefits of check dams however in the first flash floods of this moon soon we realized that the check dams are very important to control land erosion and settle sediments and lower the flow of water”
The two Gullies of the villages on which check dams were constructed inspected along with community members. The check dams have not only mitigated the erosion but also settled the sediments. The check dams also playing role in decreasing vulnerability of community natural resources. The check dam will also lower the sediments flow to the nearby dam.

In the coming months HUJRA upon recommendation of the community have planned to construct check dams on remaining Gullies, construct protection walls along agriculture land, forest plantation in mountainous range on the sides and top of the check dams and fruit orchard plantation in agriculture land.
