Learning Goal as a Student: The focus of my learning goals for this unit will be on ministry to the diverse populations in hospital with an emphasis on increasing my awareness of how to attend to those facing traumatic illness, loss and death. Additionally, I would like to learn some key phases in Spanish, Korean, and Brazilian to communicate and pray in diverse languages. A final goal would be to become more fluent in the holydays and traditions of 3 Abrahamic religions during this unit and other diverse cultures and languages in later units. The book End of Life Ministry” will be read to gain knowledge on how to listen and attend to those dealing with a major loss and/or facing death.
B. Learning Goal as a Chaplain: In the hospital and nursing home setting the constant referent setting is of a health crisis, trauma and death. That daily backround requires of a chaplain a natural facility and compassion to care for patients and families that can be enhanced through study of texts, learning from other chaplains and personal growth in spirituality and confidence in God’s power to heal on many levels not just physical. Death and loss are challenging areas of human interaction that require learning and practice in dealing with grief, death and loss.Verbatims should actualize this practical goal of improving skills in dealing with loss and death.
C. Learning Goal as a Person: Conflict resolution, management and mediation have not been part of my most successful skill set, therefor I am listening to CD “Critical Conversations” and am starting to practice these techniques in my daily life in order to confront honestly and effectively those friends, relatives and my living and working environment. A secondary goal is to focus on listening as opposed to fixing during interpersonal interactions at home, in school and in hospital.
D. Learning Goal as a group member: Although an inveterate peacemaker and a veteran quiescent feminist my group dynamic interaction is hesitant and understated usually. I need to gain my “voice’ and speak the truths, knowledge or opinions that I believe rather than listen only and not contribute. A goal in this area might be to be the first to speak in a questioning session or seminar setting rather than demure to other voices. The larger the group and more unknown the participants the less I share. Improvement of my critical feedback skills could enhance group dynamics and learning for myself and others. Tied to the above learning goal as a person, I will construct a scenario around a specific personal conflict and present it in IPR for group response and feedback.
