Community Service Reflection Paper
In this reflection paper I am going to talk about how my strengths and gifts were utilized in the service that I performed. I am also going to talk about how the service impacted those that I served. And lastly I will talk about how my service experience connects with my intended career, which is a kindergarten teacher. My service project was helping Mrs. Apperson, my teacher, with one of her students. I helped this student by helping her learn how to do the problems on one of her math assignments.
First I am going to talk about how my strengths and gifts were put to good use in my service. Two strengths or you could say gifts were used in this service project. These strengths were my math skills and my patience with children. My math skills were put to good use by being able to explain math concepts to the student. It also allowed me to teach the material to her without just directly giving her the answers to her homework. This made me very happy because this is something I wasn't sure I had the ability to do. My patience with children was put to good use because I was able to help a fifth grade child with his homework, although I mostly worked with the eighth grader with her math. Taking the time to sit down with someone and trying to teach them something that they don't understand takes patience. You have to be able to explain things more than once without getting frustrated and you definitely have to have compassion.
The second thing that I would like to talk about is how my service impacted those that I served, Mrs. Apperson and the two kids that I helped with math. My service project probably impacted Mrs. Apperson in the immediate way by giving her just one less thing to do in her incredibly busy schedule. My service probably impacted her in the long-run by her knowing that she can go to people to help her with tutoring students. My service probably helped the eighth grade girl that I helped in the immediate that she has a little better grasping of the section of math that she is currently on and that her homework was done correctly and that she did it and got the answers herself. The way that the service impacted her in the long-term was probably that she learned that she can ask for help when she needs it. She may have learned that teachers may not be the only source of help that she can get. I hope that she learned that she can always come to me for help.
The third thing I would like to talk about how my service project connects to the career that I would like to someday obtain. The career that I want to have in the future is to be a teacher, preferably a kindergarten teacher or a first grade teacher. The service connects pretty well to that career. I was able to teach two students how to do their math homework. I know that the children that I worked with were older than the ones I want to work with in the future, but I learned that I can indeed teach somebody a topic without confusing them and without just giving them the answers to the problems. This gives me hope that I will be able to have my dream career.
Lastly I would like to talk about how this experience impacted me. It impacted me by making me hopeful for the future. It made me believe in my ability to teach. It made me feel good inside because I helped someone out. It made me really happy to get the chance to do some math work, since I don't currently have a math class and I really miss having a math class.
In conclusion, I hope that this service makes an impact even if it is just a little one. I love that I got to help someone and get to use my math skills at the same time. Lastly I would like to thank you for giving me the time I needed to be able to go into the classroom and help. I hope to be able to help more with people and math.
