Keep it easily accessible
Pin it to your task bar, pin it to your home screen.
Don’t use advanced features
Advanced features are a learning curve on top of a learning curve
Simplify your vision of OneNote
Scraps of paper you can search
Messy and unorganized is ok
The beauty of OneNote is that its searchable. You cant loose anything.
You don’t need a well manicured notebook for it to be useful
9 year MVP and got my start with the MVP program with a site I founded called AnythingButiPod.com which was my full time job for 5 years until I sold it to work at another start up where I manage a few dozen more communities.
I was brought on as a Digital Media MVP
Later became the first Zune and unfortunately the last Zune MVP
And currently I am an Xbox MVP
Here is my contact information
EnzoTen.com is my personal blog where ocaionally post about Xbox or game development.
So I am an Xbox MVP.
Why am I giving you a presentation on OneNote?
[*]First of all- I use it every single day- at work and at home
[*] I am a technical project manager and OneNote helps me keep track of projects, meeting notes, and any kind of job training or cheat sheet.
I also run an internal content stategy group and use OneNote to collaborate and even lead discussions. For smaller collaborate groups i find it to be more effective than PowerPoint to present.
[*] At home I use OneNote with my family. My wife and i planned our wedding with OneNote and now manage our family of almost 5 with OneNote.
And all of these i will show you some examples later.
The second reason an Xbox MVP is presenting one note to you is…
(Most people don’t know about digital note taking software)
How many of you use OneNote?
What is interesting is that if most people dont know about digital note taking software, then OneNote’s biggest competitor is pen and paper.
[*]The important point being that dispite paper being the marketshare winner, the amount of OneNote users is very impressive.
On top of this ubiquity comes connected apps. Apps that allow you to capture more than just your typed or hand written notes.
Web Clipper is available for every major browser and even works on some mobile browsers.
Office lense is easily a top contender if not the best scanning app on any platform ever.
Office lense is built into the iPad OneNote app- it will do all the great perspective correction but wont upload as a file.
The last first party app is handy for getting emails into your notbooks. Simply send a new email or forward one to firstname.lastname@example.org- attachement even go with it. The service knows your email from your Microsoft account and you can add others as needed.
There were 3 powerful first party apps, this is just a small sample of third party apps. Its a pretty interesting ecosystem that continues to build around OneNote
IFTTT- Sharepoint App example- Get tweets into OneNote hosted in sharepoint.
For the developers in the audience, you can build your own apps to connect with OneNote too.
Dispite all the great things OneNote brings to the table. Why does paper still win?
I want to talk about how I adopted OneNote in place of paper. What it took me to reach beyond the paradigm of the pen an paper.
Be able to get to your notebooks quickly. It needs to be quicker than reaching for a pen and paper.
On my desktop, i just never shut it down.
On the widnows phone i make a folder group pf the most important pages. Then one for work seperatly i use for standup meetings.
I havent used it but Adroid has a widget that allows you to quickly access pages.
Don’t go straight for the half pipe when you are learning how to snowboard
Funny story. This is how I missed my first MVP summit.
Think about those small peices of paper you have lying around.
This was the biggest hurdle for me in using OneNote.
