The group spent the morning adjusting the machine gun’s mounts for Bones to use in his boat. He would not leave the island until he heard from Billy Ray on the walki-talki. Billy Ray had issued the radios to one of each team. Billy Ray would give alert signals this way but would give the attack smoke bomb signal. He would go to the portal of the area with his men and then a TVA security guard (he’d asked for and hope to have his old friend, Percy Ray) would pick him up silently with a pick-up truck and take him to the highway that ran over the dam, to drop off point. His equipment had been sent ahead for his attack.
He called Bud Goodloe and made sure all plans were in place. Bud made contacts to proper personnel that had anything to do with this operation. Bud was a man of organized gestures and seldom erred.
At 1500 hours, the first small boat left the island with hook and line in the water. No bait was placed on the hook. They began trolling at first, but sped up about fifteen minutes later. Billy Ray had for each man a government wristwatch. They were thrilled to receive them. To aid the men, enlarged numerals designated time in military jargon. Colonel Donovan had previously given them to Billy Ray when they graduated from the commando school in the Poconos. So now they could adjust movements according to time. Fifteen minutes later, the second boat floated off going down stream. Again, hook and line could been see as the boat purred its motor. Billy Ray waited for thirty more minutes as he made various arrangements with Bud and Billy. He was told that the President knew what was happening as well as Colonel Donovan. Then he and Little Red took off. He smiled at Little Red, beautiful orange tinted hair with freckles and bright red nose and ears. Still a lad, but was about to become a man. He did a silent prayer especially for him and then he did a vocal one for all the men in his command. They had covered the machine gun in Bones’ boat with a scarecrow that would appear from the south bank as a person, especially a fisherman.
When Billy Ray and Little Red were tying down, the sunset was appearing and Bones made his movement. Billy Ray signaled Morris from the church and informed him to begin gathering his men up for their duties. Don’t get under the tarps until its dark. All of the plans were beginning to come together.
They huddled together, tied up the boats, unloaded and began their journey up the bank and onto the ramp. George Amis and his wife would be normally on this road but two nights ago, a telephone operator overheard him in a drunken stupor, place a long distance phone call to a German that lived in Chicago. The operator had moved here from Berlin a long time ago but still understood the language and translated about the mission he was involved in and she quickly understood that the plot to explode Wilson Dam and the Nitrogen plant would happen soon. She was now a naturalized American and didn’t want anything to happen to this land she loved, especially this area. Therefore, she called her boss in and explained what she had heard. He contacted the people at TVA Security, who in turn brought Captain Billy Norman and some quickly hasten troops in from the Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville to go with him to make the arrest. At the same time a pair of twin 40mm, anti-aircraft, artillery Cannons, were brought in to place on the dam, just in case a part of the mission contained Bombers.
So the action had already begun. Bones called on the walki-talki, that a group of men had started manually drilling on the face of the dam. He was sure it was the commandos, caused he heard the German language being used.
They were half way up the bank, when Billy Ray heard on the topside, a truck to drive up and stop.
They pulled the heavy machine with them as they climbed. Once they found the west portal, they split. Doughbelly and Little Red carried the machine gun to the right for their destination, while Pepper and Spider went left. Rex and Eddie began crawling in a direct line down the middle of the area. Previously Monkey had been assigned to climb a tree, giving him good scope, and to fire as the Nazi Commandos tried to escape, in any direction, except South. However, Billy Ray, not wanting to leave anything for chance, re-positioned him and sent him over to the Nitro plant and to join and lead the TVA Security team after the escaping Nazi Commandos headed South. Bones would remain in his boat and remove the scarecrow. He was then ordered to load the machine gun with the proper ammo, and await orders from his leader. Billy Ray reached the cusp of the ridge and found Percy Ray in a pickup truck waiting for him
Percy highballed the truck and pulled on the dam crossing road. He came to a halt about twenty yards later. Billy Ray jumped out and collected his tools of attack and capture. Loaded the extra rifle with the smoke bomb. Before he dropped the repelling ropes, he took a quick look directly below him to see if drilling was being done. It was. Picked up his double high-powered flashlights, and in his left “big” pocket, placed the flashlights to off status. He gently dropped the rope down, hooked up, straddled the Iron pipe that the rope was tied to, lifted the rifle and fired. His Thompson machine gun was strapped to his right shoulder and he began dropping down. Hopefully not in an abyss.
A light from an apparent large flashlight engulfed him as he was repelling, at the same time the smoke bomb retorted and rifle fire began. He pulled his .45 pistol from its holster and fired, he’d begun a pendulum swing and fired again. This time the light went out. Bones began firing and the tracer ammo, lit up as the boat began to circle. He landed and when he did, the dogs began barking. Flipped his flashlights on, the first thing he saw then was a dead Nazi, with blood all over him and broken flashlight lens scattered all over his body.
Bones was still firing, Billy Ray called him to cease, but it must’ve not gone through on the walki-talki. In between machine gun rounds coming his way, he began running at top speed up the area where the dam connects to land, in a southern direction and off toward the 501 Research Road area. Bones was still firing and now he could see that the force of the fired rounds was swinging him around and around. He just couldn’t stop laughing, this scene was just too funny not to laugh. He was running behind the TVA Security and their dogs. This too was funny. He was winded, but managed to shout out for the dog crews to stop and head back to re-examine the area where the Germans had been thought to inhabited and see if any “stragglers” or cowards were hiding.
Still running at top speed, he came upon an area, where Ples’ men were tying up bloody nosed or staggering or unconscious Nazi Commandos. Percy Ray had gone to the river bank, to attempt to persuade Bones from firing. He’d had finally emptied his mounted weapon. Percy, for many years later loved to tell how he saw Bones just sitting in the boat, dizzy, boat full of spent shells, burn marks on his arms and fanning smoke away from his face. Somehow he’d also knocked one of his front teeth out. ###
