My name is Gavin Pilsbury. I am 18-year-old senior at Etowah High School. As a kid I really enjoyed listening to music, but I have never touched a musical instrument at all. I always thought people who can play an instrument were so talented and amazing at what they do. I would watch people as they play instruments and thought that it would be so fun and so awesome to learn how to play one. I chose how to play drums because I always liked the way the sounded and how there are all different types of drums. My product was to ultimately play a song on the drum set because I have always wanted to, and it would be a good footing to becoming a possible musician.
Upon doing research on the drums, I stumbled across a lot of interesting things about drums. I learned that playing the drums can improve intelligence and make the brain grow, By using eye-hand coordination it challenges the brain to keep on track and make new beats. Not only is it good for intelligence, but it also can release stress that is built up in your body. Physically hitting something and taking that power to constructively build something and make it your own is a healthy way to relief stress. I discovered that the drums can also be used as a way to socialize and how to feel natural and just let loose. Doing research on drums opened my eyes to a whole new point of view on the instrument and learned that it is a tool with many capabilities.
The research paper directly binds to my project by teaching me what the drums are really about and what the drums can be used for. Finalizing my final product took me some time and a lot of work. Every Saturday, I would meet up with my project facilitator, and we would practice the drums together. It was rough because some days I could not make it thus putting me behind, and I would have to learn what I missed in my free time. Since drumming is the first instrument I have ever learned how to play, I did not know what to expect. When I first started practicing on my own I felt overwhelmed and lost, and I did not know where to begin. I was training myself how to play drums, and once I could calmly produce a beat, I felt so accomplished after all my practice.
As a career choice, I could later grow up to be a drum teacher and teach people the struggles of playing the drums, or I could join a band and create music with them. Learning the drums could possibly open a new door to being a musician that I have never thought of before. There are many options on where I could potentially end up with playing the drums, but I am not sure if being a musician is my true passion. I really do love playing the drums and being original, but I think playing the drums is going to be a long lasting hobby of mine. Throughout the whole process, I learned that I can accomplish anything when I put in hard work and dedication.
The Senior Project at the beginning was stressful and annoying. After working on my project, I later then realized that it is a good opportunity to learn something new and to really put your mind to the test. I would like to thank you so very much for taking the time out of your day to read my letter.
