Nine hundred and seventy eight books arranged in an almost unrecognizable filing pattern between twenty nine milk crates and seven homemade shelves. An eclectic collection to say the least, ranging from the philosophical ramblings of Jean-Paul Sartre, Fyodor Dostoyevski, Sir Winston Churchill, William James, Plato, Euripides, Franz Kafka, Lucretius, Emma Goldman, and an assortment of Buddhist, Hindu, Sikh, Jewish, Christian, Muslim, and Mormon texts covering the interpretations of how humanity is supposed to exist. Not to mention dozens of textbooks in every imaginable academic discipline from agriculture to zoology. No, nothing here to throw out. All are too important to part with.
Then there are the legal texts. Some have been highlighted ad infinitum, like the Georgetown Law Journal, California Penal Code, California Civil Code, and more specialized texts covering hate crimes, intellectual property rights, and assorted other subdivisions of the cumbersomely hypocritical definitions of legal rights, responsibilities, and recognitions. Nope. They ain’t going away either, only to be added to.
Personal papers? Yeah, right. Many are transcripts from legal arguments prosecuted by me in every level of state and federal court. Most lost, but that result came from the duplicitous nature of the American legal system: You only get the justice you can afford. Some have been thinned out. Discarded like the abandoned dreams of a child. Others still possess a certain level of incredulity. How was I able to craft these arguments while being denied access to the legal
texts necessary to properly format appropriate references and cross-check with an up-to-date list of decisions while they were being held back by the authorities? Still an open wound, but maybe I can thin this archive down to a manageable level, say fifty thousand pages. Maybe, if I can drink enough Trader Joe’s vodka, I can cut it down to twenty thousand pages.
The horrific stench of the piles of dirty laundry require immediate attention. Wednesday is a good opportunity to tackle this monstrous chore since the library will be closed for the poorly named Veteran’s Day. The eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month, of 1918, the armistice came into effect ending the “war to end all wars”. Wars have become far more of a commonality than peacetime, so now, after being renamed it serves only as an excuse to hold sales, close official offices, and make me do my laundry. If indeed this were an opportunity to honor our veterans, perhaps there would not be such a high percentage living homeless on the streets, denied adequate medical and mental health care, inhabiting nearly one-third of all jail and prison beds, or committing roughly forty suicides every single day. The American people do not want to hear that. They just want a sale at Wal-Mart, Kohl’s, and every other retailer.
Perhaps if I am sufficiently enthusiastic, I will take apart the bookshelves on the North side and sweep all the bread crumbs, detached hair follicles, dropped wrappers, and other refuse that cannot be reached in a typical cursory cleaning. Might also rearrange the hanged clothing into a more functional arrangement that allows easier access, or create a methodology to place the dirty clothes further out of the travel path until ready for being laundered. Probably not, but it seems like a future goal to continue striving for while living in an unbelievably tiny place. Maybe I can find a better place to store the degrees and certificates already attained, because
having them framed is one thing, but keeping them in bags hanging from the wall, tends to not give them adequate respect. Plus, these items are currently in a place that simply does not fit my needs and interferes with most common daily occurrences.
Last, but not least, something must be done about the food storage area. There are shelves of Campbell’s Soup, Stagg Chili, Progresso Soup, Knorr Rice and Pasta sides, Top Ramen Soup, Skippy Peanut Butter, Safeway Jams and Jellies, Sriracha sauce, instant coffee, teas, and all the assorted other items that will not perish on these shelves. Bread is the only item that will not keep, but I go through it quickly enough that it has no chance to get moldy. Still, the storage is such an odd, haphazard mess of miscellaneous goods that I can rarely find what I desperately need in a quick easy way. Also need to upgrade my hot pot into something that will actually boil. It has been good enough to heat water for coffee or a Cup-o’-Soup, but it does not allow for more intricate meals. Then again, it served me well for about eight years in prison and for almost four years since release. It still has my CDC number machine-carved into it, and has been a faithful companion longer than most people I have known. Maybe I can find something in one of these God-awful holiday sales over the next few months. I have two microwave ovens, but the circuit breaker at the storage unit is a little too light for even the smaller one.
Regardless of all these intricate complexities, time has come to clean house, rearrange what serves as my lifetime collection of personal items, and create a more functional living space. It may take more than one day to get it optimized to a more useful circumstance, but I now have a little more free time to accomplish this task. By the end of the day, I will be down to only having fifteen credits to fight or work through, as opposed to the twenty-four I began the Fall
Semester with. Only nine more credits from the Southern New Hampshire University B.A., and only six credits from the third A.A. through City College of San Francisco. Only need a little over twenty credits next year for my primary B.A. at San Francisco State University, so there is light at the end of the tunnel finally, and it might not be an oncoming freight train.
Yeah, time to clean house a little. Right after I do the laundry.er Joe’s vodka, I can cut it down to twenty thousand pages.
