Three Character Prose Poem
Alice – 5 year old child of Bertha and Charles
Bertha – 25 year old mother of Alice
Charles – 50 year old husband and father
Daddy married Mommy ‘cause he knocked her up.
Least that’s what Grampa Dave says.
Maybe Grampa’s confused ‘cause Daddy’s older ‘n Grampa.
Don’t know why he says Daddy done some knockin’.
Daddy don’t even like knockin’ on doors.
So I doubt he ever done no knockin’ on Mommy.
I wanted to stay in school, but the rabbit wound up dead.
Missed a period, peed on a stick, and saw the + sign…
Charlie’s done right by me, though my folks don’t accept him.
He’s two years older than my Dad, which makes things awkward.
But he was there when Allie was born, and stayed here ever since.
No, he ain’t perfect, but I love that man to death…
I sure never thought it would play out like this.
Going to my baby’s first day of Kindergarten.
Less than a week after turning fifty.
Sure as Hell was frightened when Bertha gave me the news.
Yet I had no choice but to do what’s right.
No regrets and nothing holding us back.
Daddy makes some funny noises when he tells me stories.
Keeps takin’ me on snipe hunts, but we ain’t never caught one.
Now that I’m in Kinnergarpen, Mommy might go back to school.
She told me what she wants to study, but the word is way too long.
Tried to spell it for me, but all I know’s it starts with a “K”.
Least Daddy’s almost always home and makes great lunches.
Been studying kinesiology, which should help when Charlie’s sore.
Worked for a while in an old folk’s home and learned a lot in there.
Then Alice came along and I had to stay at home with her.
Charlie’s a talented writer, but the paychecks vary too much.
He’s been thinking about teaching English at the Community College.
But that’s what brought Alice into our lives, so I don’t know…
When Bertha goes back to school, I’ll have Allie every afternoon.
Looks like a fun time until she gets polluted by the school.
Soon she won’t want to play with me, just text her friends instead.
Snipe hunts and pony rides will be fading with the sun.
Might get a chance to write, the works I’ve often shelved.
Truth be known I’d rather just be with my girls…
DADDY! DADDY! DADDY! One of your books is in my class!!!
Honey, I’ve got a study group tonight at the library.
No worries baby, I’ll be here for little Allie.
Daddy? Can we get a puppy? Eddie has some extras…
Hey Charlie, have you seen this school flier?
About needing English teachers? Yeah, I took a peek…
So here we are, all three of us in school.
Yeah baby, you color, Mommy manipulates, and I conjugate.
Manipulation has never been in my arsenal Charlie.
True enough Bertie, want to color with Allie, or write with me?
Maybe I’ll do a little of both, what you think baby?
I made a new word: Constipumacolorization, that’s what we all do!
[Laughter all around]
