There are three different types of research methods. The first is Descriptive research methods and its basic purpose is to observe and record. The second is correlational research and its basic purpose is to detect naturally occurring relationships; to assess how well one variable predicts another. The third is Experimental research and its basic purpose is to explore and cause effect. These research methods have many similarities, but also many differences.
One of the similarities is between the correlation and the descriptive research methods. Both of these research methods do not use any manipulations. But the experimental research method requires there to be a manipulation to the independent variable in order to preform it. Another similarity between correlational and descriptive research methods is that they both usually conduct their experiments through a survey while the experimental just uses random selection to conduct their experiments. One thing different in the conduction of experiments between descriptive and correlational studies is that the descriptive research methods also use case studies alongside with surveys. The correlational research method uses statistical association with past surveys.
There are also some weaknesses in all of the research methods. One weakness from the descriptive research method is that it has no control of the variables and case studies may be misleading. One for the correlational research method is that it does not specify the cause and effect of the experiment. Lastly, one for the experimental research method is that the results may not generalize to other contexts and sometimes is not feasible. While there are some weaknesses in the research methods, they still all work very effectively and can really get the job done.
