Screening with Optolexia
We are offering a completely new screening method for early, rapid and reliable detection of dyslexia, based on eye-tracking and machine learning
To be able to read and write is essential in today's society. Imagine it would lbe and feel if the text would lok like this when you try to read it!
Having dyslexia, that affects around 10% of the population, and I would guess 3-500 people in this audience, is therefore a major handicap.
But if you get support early in life, you have a good chance to avoid problems later in life. Early means in the beginning of elementary schools, when you start to learn to read.
Today the majority of kids with dyslexia are identified way to late, usually in the end of elementary school, or later or never.
This will affect all subjects in school, it will affect your self-esteem, your motivation to read and learn, your future career opportunities and life in general.
The reason many kids are identified to late, or that wrong kids are identified is due to the limited recourses in school and the current methods are very time and resource consuming and not very accurate. Due to this, screening is rarely performed.
Optolexia is the result of 25 years of research and is based on eye-tracking and artificial intelligence.
The cognitive process in the brain is reflected in the eyes when you read. By analysing the eye movements while reading, we are able to identify children at risk of dyslexia.
On the screen, you see two examples of different reading patterns. The size of the circle represent how long time you spend on a spot and the lines represent how you move around in the text. The illustrations are simplified but will give you an idea how it works, our algorithms are using several hundred parameters.
We are able to find kids with dyslexia already in the beginning of elementary school - saving many valuable years
It only takes 2 minutes to screen a pupil and no manual handling is required - freeing resources in the school and makes it practically feasible.
We have a very high accuracy, both when it comes to identifying kids at risk of dyslexia as well as excluding kids not at risk of dyslexia - enables focus on the "right" children.
Last but not least, it is completely objective - not dependent on who is doing the test why you really can compare results between regions, schools, classes etc and allocate resources accordingly.
We started Optolexia one year ago. Mattias and Gustaf are researchers at the Karolinska institute and have a unique competence in eye-tracking, machine learning and how neurological disabilities are reflected in eye-movements.
