We are offering a completely new screening method for early, rapid and reliable detection of dyslexia, based on eye-tracking and machine learning
Being able to read and write is essential in todays society. Having dyslexia, which affects around 10% of the population, is therefore a major handicap if you don’t get early support.
Early means when you start to learn to read, i.e. In the beginning of elementary school. Today, the majority of kids with dyslexia are identified way to late, usually in the end of elementary school, or later or never.
Late detection will affect all subjects in school, your self-esteem, your motivation to read, future career opportunities and life in general.
The reason many kids are identified to late, or that wrong kids are identified is due to the limited recourses in school and the current methods are very time and resource consuming and not very precise. Due to this, screening is rarely performed..
Our method is based on 25 years of research. Eye-movements reflects the cognitive process in the brain and we are using eye-tracking and machine learning to analyse reading patterns.
On the screen, you see two examples of different reading patterns. The size of the circle represent how long time you spend on a spot and the lines represent how you move around in the text. The illustrations are simplified but will give you an idea how it works, our algorithms are using several hundred parameters.
The screening takes only 2 minutes per child compared to today’s methods were you need to perform a battery of tests during several years and it requires no manual handling or resources from the school that current tests do.
We are able to identify kids in risk of dyslexia in the beginning of elementary school instead of in the end elementary school as today.
We have a very high accuracy, both identifying at risk of dyslexia as well as excluding kids not at risk.
Last but not least, it is completely objective and not dependent on who is doing the screening. That means that you really can compare the results between teachers, schools and regions and allocate resources accordingly.
I started Optolexia one year ago together with Mattias and Gustaf. They are researchers at the Karolinska institute and have a unique competence in eye-tracking, machine learning and how neurological disabilities are reflected in eye-movements.
