Healthcare Data Interview Presentation with Deb Halford
HIT 23200-60, Jennifer Talbot
About Deborah Halford
She works for a small family clinic owned by Dr. Brown called Mancelona Family Practice located in Mancelona, MI
She has worked there for just over a year
Her position is a medical receptionist, however, the clinic operates by having the office staff handle the position of HIM staff
Her educational background is an Associate’s Degree in Higher Education
Her past work experience earned her the position she is in today
How the Family Practice Operates
The practice has the office staff perform the tasks of a HIM department along with their regular position duties.
A small clinic sometimes does not have the financial backing in place to have a HIM department.
The clinic has paper records and an EHR.
The clinic is currently working on the stages of meaningful use by now offering e-prescriptions within their EHR.
How Deb Uses Data
The collection tool that she created has significantly increased revenue
Uses patient demographic data and financial data
She created a “tool” for collection purposes
She does use the data to analyze how and why several patients owe the clinic
Deb’s Work-Related Experience
Worked for Prudential Insurance Company
Former claim’s processor
Worked with diagnostic and procedural codes to ensure they were accurate before reimbursement
Because of this background, Dr. Brown found her suitable for her current position
Advice from a Healthcare Data Professional
Work as a team
Never leave work to do later, do it as soon as possible
Keep an open mind for the ideas of other team members
Continue on in education to further your degree
Can be very busy and hectic, especially in a smaller practice with limited staff
Patients are sometimes not very nice and can be rude to staff but never take it personally
What I Learned From This Interview Assignment
Staffing is limited in regards to HIM in small clinics and physician practices
Education is important in regards to the type of position
Work-related experience is beneficial
Team work is a mainstay
Data is used by many healthcare professionals but some use it in different ways or for different purposes
What I Learned From This Interview Assignment Continued
Even though a medical receptionist typically would not have fit into the scope of this assignment, in this case it works
Be prepared to work on tasks that you normally wouldn’t depending on the size of the healthcare organization and the staff that is available.
