Youth Coaching & Mentoring Senior Presentation
By- Ethaniel Bridges
More about me
I’m 18 years of age and hoping to graduate from Cherokee High school in May
I played football my senior year as a outside linebacker
Would’ve played all 4 years but I made some bad decisions my sophomore year resulting me to get kicked out of school and miss 2 years of eligibility
I was blessed to make up all my credits and be able to play football this year
What I’ve been through in school and personally influenced me a lot on my senior project
I plan on attending either Georgia State University or Savannah State University to pursue a degree in business and potentially walk onto the football team
Introducing My Project Facilitator
My Senior Project Facilitator is Dean Gearing and he is 26 years of age
Been working with youth for 10 years
Worked at the Boys and Girls Club as the PE fitness coach
We’ve known each other since I was going to the boys and girls club back in elementary
Have you ever played a sport?
Ever needed extra work to improve your game and get better?
Need a mentor in your life?
I knew from day one of senior year what I was going to do my project on
I’ve been around sports my whole life and been influenced so I want to have that same impact of the next generation
I wrote my research paper over why I chose this product
Youth who is going through a hard time at home & school because that’s what I’ve been through
Looking at sports as a way for escape
Also wrote on character development
Importance Of Schooling & Building Character (Mentoring)
Developing on the court is great but I also made them realize the importance of school
Without grades you won’t be able to play/ School is the number one priority
Also let them know I’ve been in their shoes before and I would tell them no wrong, only help
Building character is another major point I hit on, that high school coaches don’t accept attitude because its not about a certain individual its about the team and team goal
Drill it into their minds now while they're young so they don’t make the same mistakes as I did
Let them know I’m there for them physically, with school, and personally
I’ve never been on the coaching side before only an athlete
Taught me to be patient because every athlete doesn’t work the same
Also teaches me responsibility and leadership
As well as lead by example
Obstacles I’ve Overcame
I had to first find athletes to work with as well as having their parents trust to work with them
Built bonds, friendships, and trust
I also impacted their lives on and off the court which was a big deal for me because I love mentoring and being the guy youth athletes look up to
I feel this way because when I was a child I needed someone to look up to as a positive influence
Can I Picture doing this as a career?
This is a career or hobby I hope to always be associated with because I love staying around the game and helping better youths game when they play and off the court as well
I plan to put together an AAU team in the next upcoming years and be the Head Coach
My Father influenced me to coach because when I was in middle school he coached my team so maybe I’ll coach my sons team one day, but that won’t be until years from now
I want to thank my project facilitator Dean Gearing for making time for me as well as my product and being there for me
Also want to thank all you judges for your time coming out and judging my project
