Doll prosthetic Leg Model Senior Project Erin Dobeis Mr. Eisenman
I am Erin Dobeis and my senior project was based on engineering. For my project, I used engineering methods to create a prosthetic leg model for a doll.
I wanted to do this because of my interest in engineering and design.
”How Does Biomedical Engineering Relate to Prosthesis”
A Biomedical Engineer’s Role in the Process / Designing the product
Improvement over the years in prosthesis with the help of engineers
Engineering by design process used in my product
One of my career goals is to become an engineer, so this project was very interesting to me
My Mentor: Scott Reece
Mr. Reece, my project facilitator, is a technology teacher at Teasley Middle School. He has been the technology teacher there for about 5 years. Three Dimensional printing is something that Mr. Reece has training in and teaches his students. He has a lot of experience with the design software that goes along with 3-D printing as well. I was very fortunate to have Mr. Reece to teach me and help me with the process of designing my product.
For my product, I created a prosthetic leg design for a doll using computer aided design software and three dimensionally printed the model. Before I could design the model on the computer, I had to research the best type of prosthetic that would be best for my small doll. Once I picked the general style of the prosthetic, I got the measurements to make sure that my model would fit my doll. Then, I learned the CAD program that I used to design my product. Once I learned my way around the program, I started creating my design and eventually printed it.
Planning, Research, and Measuring
Creating the Shape and Extruding
Creating a Hole
Printing: First- Misprint
Cutting Doll’s Leg and Printing: Second Time
This product was definitely a learning stretch for me because I have never done any computer designing along with the engineering process. In my engineering class, we work on creating designs but we haven’t dipped into the process of free hand design on the computer. This was a challenge for me, with not only the computer design, but also making a prosthetic that is legitimate. I had to do a lot of research to learn more about prosthesis, so my product would be accurate. It was a difficult yet enjoyable process.
I learned a lot of information while doing my project. More importantly I learned things about myself in having to overcome obstacles and difficulties through this process. I had problems with learning the program at first, and choosing my prosthetic style. Even though there were some small frustrations along the way, I learned to persist through these difficulties and move past them. I think this also taught me that not everything comes easy but that I have to work for the perfect design sometimes.
College and Career Interests
After high school, I plan to go to college and study some type of engineering. I really enjoyed learning about biomedical engineering so I hope to further and narrow my engineering studies to that type. I think that this project also helped me determine my passion for this career field.
Thank you for your attention and time.
