The Wiz (1978) vs. The Wizard of Oz (1939)
When it comes to childhood, watching The Wiz or Wizard of Oz is the most memorable moments. Who could ever forget the scarecrow, tinman, and cowardly lion plus Dorothy and her dog Toto? These two movies seem to have many things to compare and contrast against each other. For instance one of the movies takes place in Kansas while the other is in Harlem, New York. Both Dorothys long for something and wind up in the land of Oz because of a tornado or blizzard. Second, The Wiz is more of a musical style as to where the other is a song here and there. Embarking on what seems to be a pleasant journey soon turns tetcherus while all of the friends and villains met along the way. Third, the residents in the emerald city (except the gate keeper) are very pleasant in the 1939 version, they have colorful horses and stylist for anything. The 1978 version has people dancing and singing everywhere and everything stops and changes when they Oz announces the color he prefers. Last, the most important thing of all. The infamous slippers. In the 1978 version they’re silver and in the 1939 version they’re red. Both of the evil witches’ wishes to have them from Dorothy but she refuses. The 1939 version was best known for being in Technicolor. The 1978 version was a failure in the box office area, but later rose to be an iconic movie in the African-American culture. After comparing and contrasting these two movies, what do you think will be your new favorite?
