The issue I am addressing in this paper is animal abuse. The cruelty the animals have to face due to people is numerous. The amount of suffering cannot be put to words on what they go through. There are many steps that can be taken to stop animal abuse. Through the research done I have found that people lack courage even if they want to do something and people lack the viewpoint that this is a serious matter. Meaning that some people do not want to get involved because they are afraid, and others do not care enough and think of it as minority problem. My recommendation can improve the quality of life these animals go through because it is straightforward, and not difficult to achieve with technology today. The animals cannot be left as they are now, if they are then nothing will improve and it will slowly go on a decline of more abused animals till they go extinct.
Animal abuse was not something that just started to occur and became a problem. It has been around since the 1800s. Meaning that this has been a problem for about two hundred years. The ways people started to counter this problem was that they had several societies for the Prevention of Cruelty towards Animals. The people in the past had wanted to put an end to the inhumane treatment of farm animals and the horrible conditions they had. Even though the people are aware and some try their best to help, it will not stop and the reason for that is because people do not realize just how serious it is, and that it is not a good thing since it means there will not be complete help, so it will always be incomplete and as a result the problem will never be one hundred percent gone. One example of this is a 65 year old man killed a dog using a hunting rifle. Additionally, in 2013, police investigated forty six cases related to violations of the law on the protection and welfare of the animals.(Cyprus Mail 1) This shows that in today's society it is more common and does not look to be decreasing. Meaning the result only equals the effort put in or more than what was put in.
This issue affects the life in the community being specific by talking about letting the people there see the errors they made in their assumptions. If they remain unconvinced then nobody gets anywhere. The populations that are affected by the issue is everyone. Even though not everyone realizes this animal abuse is connected to everyone in some way. Some are affected by this because animal abuse is connected to violence. There is research where it shows that animal abuse has a strong link with domestic violence. An example of this is in abusive homes the animal may often times be used by the abuser as a pawn to manipulate the victim. This means that the animal is used as the source of why the victim cannot do anything. Animal abuse does not fall into any specific age group, it well diverse in where problems occur. Depending on the location and experiences each person has animal abuse can come from anyone regardless of age. One example of this is a woman had surrendered five more dogs adding to the twenty one already surrendered earlier in the month. The conditions that were found were described as "extremely poor."(Cuddemi 1)
The issue with animal cruelty is important because animals are around as our companions and friends however, we got people treating them like tools and as if they are something easily replaceable, and some are being treated as some sort of stress reliever. What I mean by stress reliever is that they are just beating up animals. One example of this is a man recording himself beating up a dog.(CBC News 1) This shows how there are crazy people out there. A second example is an abandoned kitten is suspected to have been abused and abandoned so badly the vets had to glue her eyelids shut. In addition, she has polyps in her ears which could leave her deaf. This shows that even though it is a small percentage there are people who are trash for doing this. The worst part is that the kitten has to go through all that, and it is not something simple. Not only was it most likely abused, it was also abandoned. Another example is there was a owner who brought the horse with him and the horse was in horrible condition. The horse was pockmarked with sores, blind in one eye, back was so raw and he was so abused he would bite anyone who would touch it. This shows that this horse went through a lot and suffered really badly. In addition, in the United States there is something going around where you gotta deal with people illegally slaughtering animals because there is stuff that is going on such as, in South Florida there is a massive illegal horse meat trade. The reason for the slaughter is because the population there have some people of the large immigrant population eat the meat since they believe it is healthy. However, for Miami it has gotten so out of hand that at this point vigilante animal cops have to step up to track down animal killers who escaped justice.(Iannelli 1) The compelling need to address this issue is the abuse needs to stop and for it to stop people need a heart because the animals are our friends who are by our side and to not care about someone by your side is just being heartless.
The laws that have been developed to address animal abuse issues are fines and imprisonment. Each fine being higher based on how bad the person was toward the animal, and whether it was intentional or not. An example would be one person was being cruel to a dog or cat, and a second person was torturing the poor animal on purpose, the fine and imprisonment would vary. Additionally, they have a television show on animal abuses called Animal Planet. It shows the viewer what the animals go through and what conditions they live in. Policies, laws or programs that should exist but do not is background checks. What this means is that the people who want a pet need a background check on whether they already have other pets and to see if they can take care of it.(Belay 1) If they are just starting out then they can get one since everyone deserves a chance to prove that they can care for an animal. Another thing that should be done is harsher punishment towards those who abuse animals. The reason to push for this is because people who break this rule clearly show that they are not bothered and continue to make animals suffer while getting hardly any punishment back in return. It does not make sense to just let them get away with it. The punishment we currently have is probably like a slap on the hand for them. Also they should add more officials who care about the cause and actually crack down on animal abusers because not all officials care about animal abuse. An example of this is Grenada sheriff ignored animal abuse and this includes a dog getting shot in the head and another dog found starved to death with a chain on its neck.(Fowler 1) This shows that there are even some officials who just have no heart and do not care.
We currently have one government agency that are setting policies and that is the federal. The laws that have been passed already for animals is Animal Welfare Act, Horse Protection Act, Humane Method of Slaughter Act, Twenty-Eight Hour Law and etc. Even though all these laws are for animals, not all of these are for animal abuse. Therefore, there needs to be more laws for animal abuse. Those that are currently working to address the issue are the FBI. There are non governmental organizations that address animal abuse and seek actions from the government, One example of a non governmental organization is PETA. PETA stands for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is an organization that helps in a lot of ways for animals. They are the largest organization in the world, with more than 5 million members and supporters. They are a group that focuses their attention in four areas where the largest number of animals suffer and they are food industry, the clothing trade, in laboratories, and in the entertainment industry.
