My name is Sally Adams, I’m 20 and in my second year of university. I play softball with the Burlington A’s. Softball is my world. I am on the university softball team. I am the best pitcher in the world, leaving high school with scholarship to the best softball school in the world. Steve Adams, which is my big brother who is 24 and is on the university Baseball team. He is in his last year of veterinary medicine. Steve and my dad have taught me practically everything I need to know about ball except they never told me that I would be one of the best ball players in the country. I am 5 foot 10 inches tall; taller than the average girl. I have brown hair blue eyes, just like my brother. My father, Rick, is one of the best coaches in the world and I am lucky enough to have him as my coach.
To make a long story short my mom died of cancer of the lungs. Doctors always said that she smoked way too much and refused to stop. Mom was the best softball player the state ever had. Everyone was devastated when they heard the passing of my mom. I miss her more than anything in the world but I truly believe that she is the reason for my brother and I having such amazing career paths. When my mother passed away I started getting really close with the catcher on my team named Jade Matthews. I would say we are best friends.

I woke made some pancakes for my brother and I, Dad was already at work. Once I finished eating my portion of pancakes I went upstairs to get dressed. I grabbed my car keys and left out the door to my friend, Jade’s house to pick her up for practice.
Once I got to jade’s house I honked twice and finally she came out with all her ball stuff. My car gets pretty crimped when there are two hockey bags of ball equipment in the trunk.
“Get in buddy,” I said with a laugh.
Jade made an odd comment, “Is Logan coming to watch our practice?”
I laughed and acted dumb, “who is Logan?”
“Logan Taylor,” Jade said like she knew that I may have had a little crush on him or something.
“If you think I have a crush on him you are wrong. He is only my friend.” I hissed out at her.
“Maybe friend with benefits,” Jade poured out of her mouth.
I thought we would not get to the ball diamond fast enough but here we are. Now I don’t have to listen to Jade talk about Logan. Logan has been one of my brother’s best friends for as long as I can remember. Everyone thinks that since we hang out and talk all the time that we have a crush on each other. He might have a crush on me but I do not have a crush on him. All I want to worry about right know is finishing university and playing softball to my fullest prudential. Practice starts the same way every time. First we warm up our arms by playing catch and work on stretching all our muscles out. My father then yells at everyone to come in and let’s talk about game day, which is tomorrow night in our hometown. It is against the hardest time in the league, we are tied with them for first right know.
“Okay team we got to work hard tomorrow night. If we win tomorrow we are going for state championship. Is that what you girls want?” Rick asks.
“Yes coach!” The whole team yells.
“Sally you are pitching. Jade you are catching. The rest of the team we will figure out tomorrow at game time.” Rick states clearly.
“Dad, you got that right. I think I can pitch five or six innings no problem,” I explain to my father or coach whatever you call him.
“Coach, you can count on me!” Jade says with a whole smile on her face.
Rick explained that he has invited the whole baseball team out to watch. I felt my stomach sink and all I could think of is that Logan Taylor would be there watching me…

Game Day is finally here. The day my town has been waiting to come for a very long time.
I was very nervous but I would never show that in front of my dad because he would bench me immediately. I think I was more worried about what the baseball team would think of me. Kind of bad, hey?
Later that afternoon, Logan Taylor came over to my house. He need to talk to my brother I thought but instead he came to talk to me.. EEEKKK!!
“Hey what are you doing here? Shouldn’t be hanging out with my brother?” I asked very confused.
“Why can’t I come talk to you?” Logan said firmly.
“You never talk to me except when you want to wish me good luck before a game or ask when supper will be ready.” I said with attitude.
Logan looked at me kind of funny and said, “I have thinking lately and I have something to tell you…”
“Okay Logan. What is it?” I could feel my stomach start to feel butterflies.
“You are the most amazing girl any man could ever ask for. You are so dedicated to softball and you love sports so much, that is every man’s dream to have a woman that loves sports just as much as they do.” Logan said scared but happy to see and hear her response.
“What are you saying Logan? Do you have a crush on me?” I said to him, just as my brother came into my room and looked very confused that his best friend was talking to his sister.
Steve Shouts, “Let’s go Logan we are going to be late for our supper plans before the game if you don’t hurry up!”
“Can I talk to your sister for a few more minutes, Please Steve?” Logan stated to Steve. My stomach sank I knew my brother wouldn’t be happy about them missing out on plans that they probably had for days.
Steve madly said, “Sure but hurry your ass up or you’re walking!”’
“What you were saying before. I will answer it right know. Yes I have the hugest crush on you!” Logan said happily.
My stomach was at this point I was expecting it to explode! I was so scared about what my brother would say if he finds out that his best friend likes me and I kind of like him too.
Me having a big mouth I said to Logan, “Honestly I like you too but I was always scared to tell you just because I never wanted you to lose your relationship with my brother.”
Logan I better run I have to be at warm up in half hour and It takes some time to get to the diamond.
Game time 6:30 pm
Dad comes up to me and says, “I know this is what you have wanted to be able to play against the hardest team in our division. Now you have to realize one thing our whole flippen town is hear hoping that you pitch you’re “A” game. We win this game, we are first place and could potentially be number one in state. Understand? Now go play ball and just remember your mother would be so proud!”
Honestly the whole time all I could think about was what Logan said to me for my big game.
First inning I struck everyone out, even their best player, Mackenzie Stuart. I was so proud of myself. All we need to do now is gets some runs and show them we can beat them.
I am up to bat, the ump yells out, “3 balls, 2 strikes. Full count!”
I knew I needed to hit this ball if it was good, 3 people on base, 2 out… I need this.
I get ready to swing the bat, I could feel that 12 inch ball hit my bat so hard…
All of a sudden I here everyone in the stands cheering… I hit a homerun.. 4 runs us, 0 runs them.
I don’t know about you but that was the best feeling in the world.
Eighth inning comes around we are wining 9-4.
Mackenzie Stuart comes up to bat remember she is the best hitter on their team. I knew I had to strike her out to win this game. Jade gives me the signal fast ball left corner. My favorite pitch to throw. Her count is 1 ball, 2 strikes. I pitched the fastest pitch I have ever pitched in my life I swear. My dad out of his seat ready to crap his pants he was so nervous. Strike the umpire shouts. My team runs out to me and tramples me in the middle of the field. I just won the game we needed to be one step closer to State Champions.
After we were all done team pictures and having our usually team talk.
Someone hit me on the shoulder and said, “WOW beautiful, I never thought you were that amazing of a ball player.” When I heard that I knew it was Logan. My world changed forever. My brother’s best friend is the person I just kissed and feel like I am falling in love with.
June 1, 1976
Logan and I are now boyfriend and girlfriend. We both love ball the same amount and believe it or not I love his presents in my life. That is something I never thought to say about my brothers best friend. The future looks very bright for us two and our relationship that we have.
ou?” Logan said firmly.
