My name is Elisha Mayberry I am a senior at Cherokee High School. I played for Cherokee High School’s varsity basketball team for four years. I received a full ride scholarship and will forgo my basketball and academic career at Glenville State College, which is located in West Virginia. Ever since I was a little kid I’ve grown up watching my Uncle Coach the sport he loves while making a major impact on all of his athletes lives and since then I’ve wanted to follow in his footsteps. My goals are to get my main degree in teaching the special needs k-12 and my secondary degree in coaching. My choice of project is coaching which I did a lot of over the summer and during my last year of playing basketball for Cherokee High School for our junior warrior program.
My research paper topic was coaching and how it influenced or helped the student athletes at the time and in the future. My research helped me realize what I needed to do as a coach to help my players in the future. Encouragement was the main thing I saw throughout my research. This was not very surprising because throughout my playing career all my coaches encouraged me which always brought the best out of me. I have learned coaching is not always the results you see on the court, it has a lot to do with the relationship and care you have for every player on the team. It also has a lot do with the development of a young male or female becoming an adult and growing to be a good role model for the youth and their peers.
My product is a homemade playbook which will have all my offensive sets, defensive sets, inbound plays, and press breaks. It relates to my research paper, by following the plays and learning to have discipline as you play which helps with character and development to the next level. My paper also describes how coaches may need plays to help guide their players. All my plays are easy to learn, because they spread the floor and give my players the freedom to create and do what’s best for them and the team in that situation. Nevertheless, a coach wouldn’t be a great coach if he didn’t have his or her kids learn plays and get them ready for any level they decide to play on.
My topic and research relate to my career perfectly. I want to coach when I grow up and help players develop and become great athletes or students. My whole family are made up of athletes and coaches (yes I am the best one if you were wondering), and they all taught and coached me up to be the student athlete I am today. I learned that I will love the process of this job which includes coaching, practice, skill development, and games. I desire to coach even more because of my product and seeing what it has to offer me in the future.
The senior project helped me realize that this will be a perfect job for me and I thank Cherokee High School for that. At first I did have my doubts but now I truly believe I am meant to coach in the near future. Before I leave you with this letter I want to say thank you for reading this and taking your time out of your day to be here, and have a blessed day.
