Milkweeds, Black eyed-susans, and Cone flowers
I learned about the importance of fertilizers and pesticides and why they are vital for plants.
Fertilizers were used in my product but, since there was no bugs no pesticides were used.
What I learned on fertilizer and pesticide use
Nurseries like Pike’s uses organic fertilizers more than synthetic.
My second facilitator stayed away from synthetic fertilizers because of the belief that the neonicotinoids in synthetic fertilizers kill are pollinators.
No need for pesticides because no bugs were around.
I met my facilitators at Pike’s nurseries to plant and maintain these plants.
For the milkweeds I had to learn cold moist stratification, because milkweeds need to be cold before they can be sown into the soil and germinate.
Coneflowers and Black Eyed-Susans were grown regularly.
My first batch of plants.
My first attempt at growing plants was with sunflowers, zinnias, holly hocks, snapdragons, and coleuses.
They failed because of overwatering and lack of sunlight.
I tried again on the second batch and failed.
My second facilitator recommended refining my project by only having me grow perennial flowers, thus the milkweeds.
To get them I was taught what cold moist stratification. This meant taking the milkweed seeds and putting twenty of them in a soaked coffee filter and putting them in the refrigerator for a month.
After a month we planted them
Where does my product go
The milkweeds for my SCCP will go to the Rose Creek Library for their butterfly garden.
Milkweeds attract butterflies so hopefully they will get butterflies
Endangered species of pollinator.
Coneflowers, black-eyed susans, and milkweeds are their favorite plants.
Growing the plants will help them by supplying them with their favorite food.
Important things I learned about ornamental horticulture
The ornamental horticulture industry has two branches: Retail and wholesale.
Wholesale growers grow the actual plant and retail sells them.
Additional facts I learned about plant growing
Plants lean toward the sun but, if you let them lean too much, the plant becomes so stretched that it can never stand up straight again. Eventually they need outdoor sun.
Over watering can wash out the seed and kill the plant.
Germinating the plant is easy, keeping it alive is hard.
What I learned about myself
I did not know the full extent of the ornamental horticulture industry.
I have an odd caring about my plants
Additional fun facts
Miracle grow soil is made with shredded trees not actual ground soil.
Sunlight, water, and soil are counted as fertilizers.
Ferry-Morse seed brand is not the best
To grow the best plants mix the soil with other substances like peat moss or worm castings.
