Hyper-V in Windows 10
“Operating system virtualization is the use of software to allow a piece of hardware to run multiple operating system images at the same time” (Virtualization, 2010).
Hyper-V is Microsoft’s hypervisor virtualization software to install, configure and operate multiple operating systems on a single computer.

Prerequisites to Install Hyper-V
Your computer must be running Windows 10 Professional , Enterprise or Education.
Hardware: 64-bit processor that supports virtualization and a minimum of 4GB of memory. (Recommended 8GB of ram or higher)

Basic Steps to Install Hyper-V
Verify your computer meets the prerequisites. (Windows version and hardware support)
Open control panel and add Hyper-V role and restart.
Open Hyper-V Manager and create a network switch.
Note: Please perform a backup of your machine before making any changes to the configuration!

Right click the Start button and select system from the menu or hold down the Windows Key+Pause/Break Key
Must be running Windows 10 Pro or Higher, Home Edition does not include the Hyper-V Role.

Verify Hardware Compatibility
Most recent processors support virtualization. Both Intel and AMD provide utilities to verify system compatibility.

You will also have to change your BIOS settings to enable virtualization. Look for virtualization technology and hardware data execution prevention. Both must be enabled in BIOS for Hyper-V .
Note: The steps required to enter BIOS and update settings vary by machine, check your manufacturers website for additional information.
Install the Hyper-V Role
Open control panel by right clicking the Start button and selecting Control panel. Search for features in the search bar and select turn windows features on or off. Select Hyper-V including the management tools and platform. Reboot when prompted.
Configure Hyper-V Networking
Open Hyper-V Manager and select Virtual Switch Manager under actions on the right hand side of the screen.
Create a new Virtual Switch Image 1
Select External if you want your virtual machine to have network access. Select Internal if you want the virtual machine to just connect to your local machine.
Select Private to limit communication between virtual machines.
Create a new Virtual Switch Image 2
Name your new virtual switch to something that makes sense. If you chose external you can rename to external so you know what type of switch it is. Leave the other settings as is and click ok.

Now that Hyper-V is installed you can use Hyper-V to create your first Operating System.

Create ISO file to use for installing Windows 10.

This tutorial will show you how to install and configure Hyper-V on Windows 10. It consists of a PowerPoint guide and video walkthrough of the necessary steps. Some steps have already been completed for the sake of time.

There are three basic steps to install and configure Hyper-V which I will go over in detail.

So what is virtualization and Hyper-V?
Operating system virtualization is the use of software to allow a piece of hardware to run multiple operating system images at the same time.
What are the benefits of Hyper-V?
You can create your own test environments.
Create a secure Windows system for online banking or online transactions such as shopping.
You can run older versions of Windows for legacy applications.
Some of you may want to run Linux and Windows on the same PC or other operating system distributions.
One of the best features is that Hyper-V is free with Windows 10 Professional or Education.
There are some prerequisites that your computer must meet before you can install Hyper-V.
The first thing to check is the version of Windows that you are running. If it is Professional, Enterprise of Education you are good to go.
Later in this tutorial I will walk you through how to verify this.
Your hardware must include a 64-bit processor that supports virtualization and you must have a minimum of 4GB of memory. I recommend at least 8GB of ram for performance reasons.
The last item is Bios support for virtualization.
If your computer meets the prerequisites, there are three basic steps to install Hyper-V.
Verify your computers meets the prerequisites.
Open control panel and add the Hyper-V role and restart the machine.
Open the Hyper-V Manager and create a network switch.
That’s it. Once you have completed these three basic steps you are ready to install and use a virtual machine.
Note: Please perform a complete backup of your machine before making any changes to the configuration.
The first step is to verify your version of Windows meets the prerequisites. As you can see, I am running Windows 10 Professional Insider Preview. Your computer may be running a different version but as long as it is Pro, Education or Enterprise your OS supports Hyper-V.
There are several ways to get this information and I have listed two.
Switch to Desktop
Right click your Windows Start Button and select system from the menu that displays. This will display not only the Windows edition but also the processor family, installed RAM and the system type to verify if it is 64-bit.
If you are unsure if your processor supports virtualization, you can download a utility from either Intel or AMD that will confirm if virtualization is supported on your hardware.
You will also need to change your BIOS settings to enable virtualization. BIOS is the Basic Input Output System that runs when your computer is first turned on. BIOS access and settings varies by machine so please check your manufacturer’s website for specific information related to your computer. For example, on some computers you hold down the function key F2 during the boot cycle to enter BIOS setup. Once in setup locate and enable virtualization technology as well as the hardware data execution prevention option. Both must be enabled for Hyper-V to function.
The next step is to install Hyper-V.
Now that you have verified the prerequisites and enabled virtualization in BIOS we can begin the installation of the Hyper-V role.
Open control panel by right clicking the start button and selecting control panel.
Search for features in the search bar and select turn Windows features on or off.
Select Hyper-V, including the management tools and platform from the window that displays and click ok.
Windows will install the Hyper-V role and require you to reboot.
I’ll switch to my desktop and walk you through the steps to install the Hyper-V Role.
Right Click the Start button, select control panel.
Search for features, click on Turn Windows Features on or off.
Select Hyper-V Role and sub roles click ok.
For my tutorial I have already installed Hyper-V to not require a reboot so you will see the Hyper-V role is already installed.
Once your computer restarts, you will need to configure networking for Hyper-V. Open the Hyper-V Manager and select Virtual Switch Manager under actions on the right hand side of the screen.
Create a new virtual switch by selecting one of the three available options and click create virtual switch.
Choose external if you want your virtual machine to have network access.
Select internal if you want the virtual machine to just connect to your local machine
Select private that limits communication to just between virtual machines.
If you are unsure you can click on each option and a description of each type will be provided.
Name your new virtual switch to something that makes sense to you. I like to match the name to the type of connection so using external my name is external. Leave the other settings as is and click ok.
Open Hyper-V Manager
Select Virtual Switch Manager
Create new virtual switch
Rename virtual switch click ok
