All of my life my music of choice has been limited strictly to the rap genre. Especially in my early teen years, rap music really caught my attention. The rap genre was and still is more appealing to me than all the other genres due to the fact that it is constantly evolving and the fact that some of the things they say are very relatable to my life. I enjoy a wide variety of rappers but the few I enjoy the most would have to be Lil Wayne, Drake, and 21 savage.
My all-time favorite rapper is Lil Wayne, also known as Dwayne Michael Carter Jr, Tunechi, Weezy, Mr. Carter, etc. Wayne was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana in the neighborhood of Hollygrove, and often raps about the struggle he had to go through by growing up there. He's always been my favorite rapper since the first time I listened and could actually understand rap music. He has been at the top of the rap game for years and still to this day rules the rap game in my opinion. In addition to being the best rapper alive he also has his own label, known as Young Money, which started in 2005. What makes him even more interesting is that he doesn’t just limit himself to rapping, he also is a singer, author, songwriter, and entrepreneur. I listened to all his songs over 100 times and almost every time I listen to it, I hear something or understand an synonym or analogy that I didn’t catch the previous time. Which is why I think he has been and will always be my favorite.
On my list of favorite rappers, Aubrey Drake Graham, known simply as Drake is the clear number 2 for me. He is a member of Lil Wayne's label Young Money. I think the fact that Lil Wayne took Drake in like a father or big brother would, is a reason why I like Drake so much. Drake is like a younger version of Wayne when it comes to rap. He shouts out and gives credit to Wayne for being that role model that he needed in plenty of his songs. Drake would be nowhere close to where he is now if it wasn’t for him. Even though he is a great rapper, Drake is an even better singer. He has a lot of great albums but the most popular ones for me has to be the Take Care album, So Far Gone album, Thank Me Later album, and my favorite is his most recent album Views from the 6. The "6" is also known as Canada which is where Drake is from. Like Wayne, Drake also isn’t just a rapper and singer, he is also a songwriter, record producer, actor, and team ambassador of the NBA team the Toronto Raptors. Drake is well prepared to take over the rap game when Lil Wayne decides to retire.
Number 3 on my list is Shayaa Joseph but is known as "21 Savage" from Atlanta, Georgia. 21 Savage is the youngest of the three rappers only being 23 years old. 21 Savage is a rapper that I just started listening to about a year ago. What caught my attention about his songs was the fact that I could relate to them because we had similar childhoods. We both grew up in the "hood", fathers in prison, and single mothers working multiple jobs to get the family by. By him making music that I can relate to it makes it feel like he is talking to me or somebody finally understands what I went through as a kid. It also gives me faith that better times are coming, because if he could make it out that type of environment then I can as well because he had it worse than I did growing up. He constantly got suspended and expelled for fighting which ended up leading to him not even attending high school. Also 21 Savage was shot 6 times and ended up taking the gun from the shooter then starting shooting him and killing him. So seeing somebody go through something ten times worse than I did and make it out and become successful, shows me that there is no excuse. He only has a couple albums so far but I can’t wait until he drops his next one. He most certainly will make his way into the top rapper ranks as time goes by.
There are a lot of great rappers out there but these three stick out to me cause they all do the same thing in different ways. Lil Wayne uses synonyms, Drake sings, and 21 tells his childhood story but they all relate to me in a certain way. That should play a part in anybody's decision making when it comes to the type of music a person decides to listen to because it means more when it’s not just words and a beat.more appealing to me than all the other genres due to the fact that it is constantly evolving and the fact that some of the things they say are very relatable to my life.
