Expectations and Guidelines
What do we mean by Social Media?
The current list of sites that will be open to staff are listed below. While this list is subject to change, expect notification on sites that need to be removed. These will be opened starting January 30th, 2017.
Why does GCS use Social Media?
The answer may seem rather obvious…and that’s because it is.
It’s a great way to connect students with outside experts.
A growing number of parents utilize sites like Facebook as a primary communication tool.
It’s a free platform for connecting with the community.
Using Social Media in the Classroom
Any site categorized as “Social Media” will be available to staff during and after school hours.
Social Media accounts created for school purposes must be…
approved by the Principal, Director of Technology, or Superintendent.
registered with the Director of Technology.
a school specific account (not used for personal purposes).
created with a staff email address, either @goshenschools.org or @staff.goshenschools.org.
In order to monitor the content of GCS sanctioned Social Media accounts, staff must accept requests to connect or friend from school sanctioned accounts of the Principal, Director of Technology, Superintendent or designees.
Students will not, by default, have access to “Social Media” sites during school hours. Requests for student access must come through your Principal.
Any student using an online service for school purposes, including Social Media sites, must meet the requirements of the site’s End User License Agreement (EULA). Staff are expected to read and understand these requirements prior to allowing any student to access these services.
Staff are expected to get approval from school administration and communicate with parents if Social Media sites are going to be used and/or accessed by students in the classroom.
Access to Social Media sites provides more opportunity, but also greater risks.
Intimidation or Bullying
Accessing Inappropriate Content
No computer system can block content more effectively than student engagement and good classroom management skills.
Electronic communications that you feel are inappropriate or abusive MUST be reported to the principal, whether involving staff, students, or both.
Students must understand how to report situations they feel are inappropriate or abusive.
Using Social Media Personally
Social Media accounts created for personal use must not…
post information in such a way as to imply authorization by Goshen Community Schools
connect to or friend a student or parent account when the relationship is primarily based on your affiliation with Goshen Schools
post information that is inflammatory or that could compromise the Corporation’s mission
Please DO post about GCS events and activities; we want to get the word out!
Discuss your needs with your Principal
If approved, create a school specific Social Media account using your school email address
Register your account with the Director of Technology
What you post is public record, so be thoughtful and use common sense. It quite possibly could end up on the front page of the newspaper!

Social Media category includes Facebook, Google+, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, and many others
Announcements for GCS must originate from a GCS sanctioned account, not a personal one. We don’t want the public to be confused about where they should get their information.
From a personal account, it is okay to forward or re-post information originating from a GCS sanctioned account.
Don’t have a personal account and then post information about GCS as though you are an authority for GCS. We want users to find the information they need from our school sanctioned accounts.
