Hello my name is Damon Sheffield. When I graduate from Cherokee I am going to Tulsa Welding School at the Jacksonville Florida campus. Once I finish schooling there I plan on doing pipeline welding for a little while so that I can save up enough money to start up my own business. I haven’t decided on exactly what kind of business I want to start yet, but itll either be a welding fabrication shop or a custom auto restoration shop. Both are things that I love to do. For my Senior Capstone Career Project I turned my grandpas 1979 Chevrolet K10 pickup that sat for 20 years, into my daily driver.
Auto Restoration is the process of taking an old vehicle that others may look at as worthless, or junk and turning it into a masterpiece. Through my research I have learned that if a vehicle sits for a while without being driven many parts will fail. Parts such as gaskets in the engine and transmission will begin to go bad or dry rot causing it to leak. If a vehicle sits without the protection from a garage will also start to develop rust. Paint will also begin to fade or chip because of the environment.
Every since I was a little kid I wanted to bring that old chevy Scottsdale back to like. My grandpa originally baught the truck to use as a farm truck. Then it was passed down to my dad. My dad drove the truck for a while. Then it sat for a total of twenty years without being touched. For my Senior Capstone Career Project I decided to restore it. Along the way I faced many obstacles. For example while driving the truck ive had parts fail. Such as the universal joints on the rear driveshaft busted causing the driveshaft to fall out. Money was also an obstacle that I faced considering that restoring an old vehicle is exspensive. Another obstacle that I faced along the way would have to be setting up times to work with my mentor considering he is always busy since he has his own mechanics shop.
My topic and research relates to my future because I plan on opening a shop restoring old vehicles. Even if I don’t open a business restoring cars and trucks, Auto Restoration will always be a hobby of mine. This project has opened my mind to just how much work that goes into being a mechanic I learned a lot from working with my mentor. Before I started this project I knew how to do basic mechanics such as changing breaks but now I understand a lot more about the fundametals of how that parts all work together to keep a vehicle running nice and smooth. I also learned that I love working on cars.
I think that the Senior Capstone Career Project is a great way to get high school students thinking about their lives after school. It helps to teach students more about their future career and teaches them more about who they are and what they enjoy doing. I really enjoyed working with my mentor and learning more about what he does. I would like to thank all of the judges for taking the time out of their day to listen and view my project.
