I have been playing soccer for over 12 years and it has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I wanted to do something related to soccer for my project since I love the game so much. I contacted a family friend that coaches an under 16 girls asked if I could help out, and she let me take on a role of assistant coach
My paper was on the benefits of youth sports. I found in my research that the prevalence of obesity in children more than tripled from 1971 to 2011 and is now the number one health concern for children. The benefits that sports can have in children go far beyond the obvious physical ones, like obesity, they can benefit the child psychologically and socially as well. Being an assistant coach I was able to observe changes in physical ability as well as see new friendships being made
I worked with the head coach, Chrissa Hofstetter, who works as a nurse. However, she has been coaching recreational youth sports for many years. My family has known her for a long time as my sister has played soccer with her daughter for several seasons. She taught me how to talk in an authoritative way to the team that is required to coach. This helped me learn how to communicate with the team and relay my instructions easier.
Dynamic and Brazilian Warm-up
Dynamic warm-ups are better for stretching muscles out that ordinary stationary stretching that most teams do
Brazilian warm-ups are a first touch drill that allows the players to work on their first touch and control of the ball
four corners drill
Build up to 5 drill
I had never coached a team before, so it was a challenge in the beginning to communicate my instructions to the players. It is a big leap from playing the game to coaching. It was a new experience having to articulate my ideas to the players instead of just doing it myself
In doing my senior project, I have seen great improvements in my social skills. Being a coach is a very social demanding job and if you aren’t good at talking to people, you will not be very successful. As the season progressed, I became more acquainted with my facilitator and the team. This made it far easier to communicate with them. Time management was also an issue as it was difficult to make it to all of the practices, which were twice a week after school, and games on the weekend.
