Example 1: Standard Form
The highest exponent goes first. Then write in descending exponents order.
Each number and variable is a monomial together they make polynomial.

Write each polynomial in standard form. What is the degree? Number of terms?
Ex 1: 3x + 9x2 + 5
Ex 2:5x + x – 3
Ex 3. 4x + x + 2
Ex 4.3n3 + 1 2n + 5n4
Ex 5.4 1 + 2x2
Ex 6.2 + 3x3 4x
Determine the end behavior of the polynomial function.
*Look at the term with the highest exponent
Exponent is even
Exponent is odd
y = 3x4 + 6x3 x2 + 12
y = 2x5 + x2 4
y = x - x2 + 2
y = 50 3x3 + 5x2
Identify the end behavior of the polynomial function.
Degree = 4 degree = 3
degree = 2
Turning points- the number of places the graph switches from increasing to decreasing or decreasing to increasing. Possible turning points is one less than the degree turning points = n-1
Write in standard form, determine the end behavior, and find the number of possible turning point
12x4 – x + 3x7 – 1 –x + x2 + 2
50 – 3x3 + 5x2 20 – 5x6 + 3x – 11x3
