Judges, Senior Project
Cherokee High School
930 Marietta Hwy.
Canton, GA 30114
My name is Cody Stokes, and I am a senior here at Cherokee High School and an aspiring Law Enforcement Official. I chose to do my senior project on Law Enforcement with a focus primarily on S.W.A.T. because that is where I want to take my career. I have grown up seeing people in some disastrous situations, struggle, and being abused. I have seen families become torn apart and children get displaced into “the system.” I want to be the change and a beacon of hope for people. Through this project, I set out to learn more about the field and educate myself on how to prepare for this big life change.
My research paper that was completed earlier this year consisted of the importance of police, why law enforcement is essential, and the importance of community policing. Some things I researched were what roles law enforcement plays in society and what would happen in the absence of police and society’s views on policing. My research over the past year has allowed me to understand why having a force dedicated to order, justice, and helping others is so imperative.
My product is a presentation and a pamphlet; it will include things along the lines of SWAT principles, tactical mindsets, how to make schools safer, how to be prepared for a school shooting, how to prepare for bomb threats, how to prepare for biological and chemical attacks, and include recommendations from the experts on how to improve the safety of our future generations. However, I have faced many obstacles in deciding on my product. Many of these challenges are that much of what I learned is considered sensitive information; in addition to this, finding time to meet with facilitators who are full time deputies and investigators and figuring out a pragmatic way to present it to you was very difficult. However, I feel that I have successfully overcome these challenges and found a structured and informative way to present this project. I learned during my time with the facilitators and creating this product the importance of time management. As we haven’t presented yet, I cannot determine the success of my project, but I am very optimistic.
My project directly correlates with the career I would like to pursue which is criminal justice. S.W.A.T. is a popular division of Law Enforcement, so I was able to do my project with someone on an actual S.W.A.T. team. It has done nothing but encourage me more and reassure me this is the path I want to take in life. As Chief Tecumseh once said, “Seek to make your life long and its purpose in the service of your people.”
I believe Senior Project is definitely a good idea; however, I believe there are many improvements that could be made. I feel my biggest critique is the fact it’s limited to one class and the fact it’s a graduation requirement. Nevertheless, it provides students with an opportunity to academically get on the job experience and explore a wide array of career fields and introduces them to the requirements required for their desired field.
Thank you, Judges, and I look forward to presenting for you!
