It was dark as the Tardis materialised at Fathersham halt Train station . The station was a disused red brick building with old Victorian lamp lighting which no longer worked . The glass of the station windows were filthy and murky with years of neglect. Grass was overgrown all around the station . It had shut down many years ago , a victim of the Doctor Beeching cuts of the 60s , it was a sad state from it’s heyday of use in the Victorian era.
“ Doctor . Where is this ? “ Peri asked as she ventured outside the Tardis in her Victorian outfit fresh from her encounter with the Rani and George Stephenson. The Doctor followed her out on to the disused stone platform . A owl hooted in the distance , the wind whistled through the empty and eerie station .
“ Somewhere in England , about a 100 years on from our last adventure by the look of it , Peri “ the Doctor replied . He had a mop of blonde hair and a bright garish multi colour frock-coat and a kindly smile . He walked up and down Fathersham halt inspecting the platform initially and then he opened the creaking door into the waiting room . He pulled a torch out of his pocket and used it to look around the waiting room , years of dust and cobwebs had enveloped the room, clearly no one had been here for a very long time .
“ Sad , you humans build such beautiful things then you move on so quickly “ The Doctor tutted.
Peri joined him from the doorway . “Evolution , Doctor, from the Train to the motorcar . Just the way things are I guess”
“ Evolution ? A travesty I say , filling the roads with cars and destroying the environment in the process, The Train a triumph of Victorian engineering , built to last “ The Doctor spread his arms in the air in protest of the injustice of it all. Peri sighed , she hoped he wasn’t going to give her a lengthy lecture on the subject mainly as it wasn’t really her fault .
“ Whereas the Train was always and is so environmentally friendly , Doctor “ Peri retorted.
The Doctor huffed with indignation at her rebuke. He was about to reply when the unmistakeable sound of a steam train could be heard passing by . The Doctor and Peri raced out on to the platform to see a bright green steam engine chug into the station , steam billowing in it’s wake . The train and all it’s compartments had a strange yellow pale glow to it . The station’s Victorian lamps had come to life and illuminated the platform as the train ground to a halt
There was a throng of passenger’s waiting on the platform to board the train , they were all dressed in Victorian attire and had a pale white ghostly glow .
“Doctor , what on earth is going on ? “ said Peri nervously
“ Your guess is as good as mine , but I suspect the answer is less to do with Earth at any rate ! “
As the passengers started to board the ghostly train , the station master walked down the station towards the Doctor and Peri . He was a tall stern faced man with grey hair in traditional railway uniform , he also had the pale white glow of the passengers.
“ Please board the train , Sir and Madam “ the station master rasped at them.
The Doctor shook his head . “ I’d rather not my good man, particularly as I don’t know where it’s destination is “
The Doctor and Peri edged backwards from the ghostly station master as he closed in on them
A cruel sneer played across the station master’s features.
“Destination sir ? Well that would be “ he paused a few moments “Hell , of course”
Peri screamed as the station master lunged for them but the Doctor bravely pushed him backwards and the station master fell over surprised by the Doctor’s move.
“Come on Peri, back to the Tardis “ The Doctor urged. Peri heartily agreed , she wanted out of this horror. They both turned to head back to the safety of the Tardis only to be faced with two ghostly train guards who grabbed them and forced them on to the Train with their unearthly grip too much to break free . The station master helped the guards with their task .
The Train set off from Fathersham Halt , as it set off the Victorian lamps went out and there was no sign of the station master as the Station returned to it’s disused state . There was no indication of what had happened as the owl again tooted in the darkness of the english countryside.
The Doctor and Peri were bound with rope to the seating of one of the brown oak compartments on the train . The door to the compartment had glass windows which showed the train corridor outside , occasionally a ghostly passenger would pass by the window on their way back to their own compartment. The main window on their right showed the dark haunting countryside as the Train steamed onwards to it’s destination . Peri squirmed trying to free herself from the tight bonds of the rope.
“It’s no good Peri , I already tried that “ Said the Doctor cheerfully
“ I don’t really want to go to Hell Doctor “ replied a exasperated Peri
The Doctor grinned , infuriatedly . “ Hell doesn’t exist Peri , it’s a myth . I’mn interested to see where we are going though “
“ Personally I’mn not that keen to find out , We are on a ghost train , this is creepy”
“ We have little choice at the moment , I’mn afraid “ replied the Doctor.
Peri looked at the wall on the other side of the compartment it had a old dusty calendar and it was on the month of October and the date 31st was circled in red pen . So it was Halloween , that figured.
“ Halloween , a night of the ghosties Peri , perhaps this is beginning to make sense”
“ I thought you said , ghosts don’t exist , Doctor “
“ They don’t as you think of them , they are usually echoes of the past or future . These particular ghosts don’t seem to conform to this type , I wonder why ? “ The Doctor explained as another ghostly passenger passed by the compartment. The train continued to rattle away to it’s grim destination
Peri had fallen asleep , the constant motion of the Train rocking her to sleep. The Doctor wondered what exactly was happening , it was like something out of a ghost story you would find in some of Earth’s books . He was sure there must be a rational explanation for all this but what it was he had no idea what that was. Suddenly there was a rattling and a rustling of what sounded like heavy chains , it slowly came closer and closer . The noise woke Peri abruptly as she stirred .
“ Be brave Peri , maybe they are trying to scare us “ the Doctor tried to sound reassuring.
“ It’s working “ Peri grimaced as the rattling and rustling continued .
The Door to the compartment opened and a ghostly figure wrapped almost completely in white bandages and clad head to toe in metal clunky chains appeared , the ghost had a almost friendly face with dark hair and haunting brown eyes
“ Tickets please “ the ghost requested in a low moan
“ You’ve got to be joking “ said Peri with sarcasm.
“ Tickets please” the Ghost repeated
“ Peri has a point , we are your prisoners “ added the Doctor
“ Fare dodgers then , we will see what old nick has to say about that , good sir “ the ghost chuckled as it rattled and rustled away as it left the compartment .
“ Yes I’mn sure we can take it up with him when we get there “ the Doctor called after the retreating ghost with a little more bravado than he and Peri were really feeling.
A little later that night the train ground to a shuddering halt as it reached it’s final destination . The Doctor looked out the window as it was filled with smoke but more smoke than normal , maybe more of a fog than smoke from the train . Also he and Peri felt a fierce heat all around them , it was quite uncomfortable .
“ Is this Hell , Doctor ? “ Asked Peri weakly
“ Well it feels like it Peri but I rather doubt it “ said the Doctor , “ What are our captors up to ? “
The Ghost Train guards returned to the compartment and undid the Doctor and Peri ropes and released them from the seats. They were roughly bundled out of the train and into the thick fog
“ What is this place ? “ enquired the Doctor . “ I demand that you tell us “
The ghost train guards made no reply other than to thrust them both further into the macabre fog .
Peri wondered what was to become of them , it was like some horrible nightmare. They heard a clock chime from nowhere in the heat of the fog , it continued to chime , Peri counted the chimes which stopped with dramatic effect at it’s 12th chime .
“ 12 chimes “ said Peri
“ The Witching hour , anything could happen now “ Ventured the Doctor, grimly
The ghosts kept them moving onwards deeper and deeper into the murk. Peri had a overwhelming feeling of apprehension , a foreboding of what was to come. Ahead of them they could hear something in the gloom , a slithering noise . As they got closer they caught a glimpse of something ahead . A figure dressed in a black robe carrying a metal scythe in it’s skeletal hands . It looked for all the world like the Grim Reaper .
“ Impossible “ exclaimed the Doctor , incredulous .
The figure didn’t seem to care about the Doctor’s disbelief as it came nearer , they could see it’s face now a hideous skeleton face with eyes burning bright with a un-natural blaze. The guards left them fading into the fog like shadows abandoning them to their fate . The Figure raised it’s scythe menacingly at them both .
“ I think it is time to stop this now , I’mn sure this is some kind of a joke “ protested the Doctor.
The Grim Reaper shook it’s head.
“ I think the guy is serious , Doctor “ said Peri , worried
The Grim reaper brought it’s scythe down again and again on the defenceless Doctor hacking him to death as Peri screamed repeatedly as the Doctor’s blood splurted everywhere .
“ No, no , Stop “ Peri cried out helplessly.
It was over , The Doctor was dead !
Finished the Grim reaper turned it’s attention to Peri as it raised it’s scythe to kill Peri , she let out a terrible scream as the reaper hacked her to death
Peri woke up in her bedroom in the Tardis , well that had been quite a nightmare .
HAPPY HALLOWEEN ing her to sleep. The Doctor wondered what exactly was happening , it was like something out of a ghost story you would find in some of Earth’s books . He was sure there must be a rational explanation for all this but what it was he had no idea what that was.
