Developer Services Solutions Overview
What can I offer customers now?
Click the ISV logos for more information on each solution.
What are Developer Services?
A key enabler of future revenue and driver of stickiness. Developer Services is also commonly referred to as DevOps. The category brings together software development, quality assurance and operations. In the context of Azure this group of products helps engineering teams get their code deployed onto Azure, and thus spans the entire code delivery pipeline.
What customers are asking
What Dev Services deliver
How can I simplify development and deployment by having them on the same platform?
How can I ensure that we are using the latest best practices for app delivery?
How can I use DevOps pipeline with Azure?
Accelerated time to market
Stay ahead of the competition
Faster feedback from users
Reliable releases with robust process and testing of scripts
Improved product quality and improved customer satisfaction
Who to speak to
What to ask
How do you balance software quality with the demand for rapid and regular releases?
How do you ensure that your developers follow the latest best practices in development and testing?
How do you optimize testing to maximize developers’ time spent on coding?
Do you develop and deploy on the same platform?
Continuous Integration / Delivery (CI / CD)
CI: merging all developer working copies to a shared mainline several times a day. In CD, software is produced in short cycles so that it can be reliably released at any time.
Application infrastructure functionality, enriched with cloud characteristics.
“Infrastructure as code”
Management of, and repository for, application source code to enable collaboration.
API management is the process of publishing, promoting and overseeing application programming interfaces (APIs) in a secure, scalable environment.
Developer Services are a key driver of “stickiness”, driving Azure loyalty with developers.
CMS/e-Commerce Category Overview
What is CMS/e-Commerce?
An obvious solution to run in the cloud. There are so many exciting ways to grow a business online and drive engagement. Content management (CMS) and E-Commerce systems play a fundamental role in this, for both B2B and B2C scenarios. The category brings together CMS and E-Commerce as they often go hand-in-hand. In the context of Azure these ISV solutions are usually the subject of initial customer discussions as they align very well with cloud characteristics and load patterns.
What CMS/e-Comm. delivers
How can I optimize my online sales?
How can I simplify tasks for my content editors?
How can I deal with (un)expected peak loads? My site can’t go down when we run a campaign!
I need a campaign site now! We can’t wait for our IT department to order new hardware, as we currently have momentum for our product.
Very quick time to market: solutions are up and running in minutes
Elasticity: automated scaling when consumption increases/decreases
In terms of importance, Marketing department > IT department.
Marketing department: cares about speed and scale
Focus on marketing resources
IT department: cares about safe implementations, following the right processes
Technical resources that deal with development or infrastructure for CMS/E-Commerce solutions
What is the average time needed to set up IT infrastructure for a digital marketing campaign?
What if I could help you to change that from x weeks to 30 minutes?
How do you handle peak loads on your systems (e.g. during a successful campaign)?
What if I can help you remove the issues that come with scaling out the infrastructure during peak loads?
What if I can help you to create a safe and reliable infrastructure that would also satisfy the business (=marketing department)?
The combination of a CMS and E-Commerce platform for managing digital experiences and online commerce solutions.
Open Source CMS/e-commerce
Open source CMS and E-Commerce solutions that run on Azure IaaS and PaaS
Platforms that focus on specific e-Commerce functionality and usually plugin to other systems.
Add-on capabilities related to e-commerce.

"The number of enterprise applications optimized for mobility will quadruple by 2016, driven both by competitive necessity and rapidly evolving technologies that support faster and more secure enterprise ‘appification’. The benefits from efficiencies and business innovation on the back of this app explosion will transform industries and markets." — IDC
The MGI Industry Digitization Index examines sectors across the economy through the lens of digital assets, digital usage, and digital workers, compiling 27 indicators to capture the many possible ways in which companies are digitizing. To measure digital assets, for instance, we consider business spending on computers, software, and telecom equipment, as well as the stock of ICT assets, the share of assets such as robots and cars that are digitally connected, and total data storage. Usage metrics include an industry’s use of digital payments, digital marketing, and social technologies, as well as the use of software to manage both back-office operations and customer relationships. On the workforce side, we evaluate more than 12,000 detailed task descriptions to identify those associated with digital
technologies (such as database administration). We also estimate the share of workers in each sector in technology-related occupations that did not exist 25 years ago, and we determine digital spending and assets on a per-worker basis.
The index shows that the US economy is digitizing unevenly, with large disparities among sectors. Beyond the ICT sector, which often sets the standard for the highest level of digitization on various indicators, the most highly digitized parts of the economy are media, professional services, and financial services. The index also highlights where there is room for growth in digital capabilities. Utilities, mining, and manufacturing, for example, are in the early stages of digitizing and connecting their physical assets, and they could be at the forefront of the next wave of digitization. Labor-intensive industries such as retail and health care are expanding digital usage, but substantial parts of their large workforces do not use technology extensively. Industries that are both highly labor-intensive and localized, such as construction, leisure, and hospitality, also tend to rank lower in usage, notably in the way they conduct customer transactions. Lagging sectors could experience catch-up growth if the long tail of smaller and less digitized businesses begins to close the gap with leading companies. Thousands of small retailers have few if any digital operations beyond accepting credit cards, for example, in striking contrast with Amazon, Walmart, or Zappos. In manufacturing, many smaller firms use only basic enterprise software for administration, and they are years behind the largest aerospace or machinery manufacturers in their use of analytics.

It’s just not our point of view, Forrester has conducted an in-depth study that show significant economic advantages to building on PaaS
Key talking points:
Return on investment (ROI): A measure of a project’s expected return in percentage terms. ROI is calculated by dividing net benefits (benefits minus costs) by costs.
Net present value (NPV): The present or current value of (discounted) future net cash flows given an interest rate (the discount rate). A positive project NPV normally indicates that the investment should be made, unless other projects have higher NPVs.
IT Time Saved: Requiring 80% less IT time required for administration of applications on PaaS, adding up to $132,240 saved in the first year. This allows the organization to focus on application innovation, not administrative tasks.
Faster Time to Market: Improving application delivery time-to-market by 50% with Azure PaaS, leading to $376,441 in increased profit in the first year. The organization could deliver applications running on Azure in half the time, meaning revenue could be earned more quickly.

[Speaker Guidance: People get this intuitively, and this is an exciting slide to developers, at it dramatically shows how THEY benefit the company. The benefits of innovation are best achieved at a fast delivery cadence and align nicely with DevOps (which is almost built into the PaaS model – or at least more simply achieved. ]
Establish that the cost reduction benefits that have come from virtualization are coming to an end and IT organizations need look to new innovations associated with operating services in a cloud model in order to realize the next wave of business value.
Virtualization has been amazing technology for the datacenter, enabling efficiencies and cost savings through increased density and decoupling workloads from physical server hardware. But 10 years later we’re starting to run out of workloads to virtualize leaving businesses wondering where IT should look for the next wave of business value.
For the answer, IT needs to look to where the business is investing. Research shows more business departments spending on so-called “shadow IT”; public clouds offering IaaS and higher level services through a consumer-style self service provisioning portal that delivers IT resources more rapidly and easily than using the internal IT department. Some organizations already recognize this threat and have chosen to create a new, more agile IT alternative within the organization. Looking higher up the stack, businesses are growing their investment in applications at a much faster rate compared with infrastructure investment.
IT organizations need to get back into the game by looking to new innovations that support applications and services that drive the business forward. The good news is that Microsoft has been delivering applications and services in this model in Microsoft Azure for several years and has developed a series of innovations from that experience.
Let’s examine the benefits of this approach.
Before virtualization IT was considered a cost center and TCO was the most important attribute for Businesses
Virtualization helped IT reduce TCO by consolidation and better utilization of Infrastructure thereby adding value to the business
Most enterprises have optimized their infrastructure using Virtualization - 70% of all x86 architecture workloads are virtualized *. There is not a lot of scope left for IT to add value through virtualization alone
Businesses now want to use this virtualized Infrastructure to power their innovation agenda and TCO, although still important, is second to innovation for Businesses. This has opened a door for IT to provide enormous value to the Business and become part of this innovation agenda
This innovation is happening through applications and infrastructure optimization alone is insufficient to power this innovation
Businesses are starting to recognize this. Spending on Enterprise software and applications is projected to increase by 7.2% CAGR in next 4 years as compared to 4.4% in overall IT spending -- that means software and application spending is projected to grow nearly twice as fast as overall IT spending
38% of IT spending is happening outside IT ***. This is projected to grow beyond 50% by 2017 ***
“45% of CIOs have a second, fast, mode of service delivery that complements their rock solid operations”….from Gartner Symposium, Oct 2014
“38% of IT spend is outside IT and growing. Salespeople are going directly to the business - whether you like it or not”….from Gartner Symposium, Oct 2014
