By: Christine Walsh Personal Statement I aspire to be a Social Worker because I am currently a Home Caregiver at the CLSC and I have daily hands on experience visiting clients in their homes to help them with activities of daily life and being a witness to so many people living in isolation, poverty or without at least, their basic needs being met. I can definitely say that I have a need to help fellow human beings. Becoming a Social Worker is important to me so I can be qualified to work with individuals who are struggling to make positive changes in their lives. It would be profoundly satisfying for me to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work and then proceed to helping individuals diligently. As a Home Caregiver I am constantly in observation mode, listening to clients and their family members, decoding needs, offering moral support and reporting my observations to the Multidisciplinary team. I believe that my experience as a Home Caregiver has been priceless and that it will help me tremendously in this program and in my future endeavors. I have gained excellent observation skills, I’ve mastered my approach, and my empathy and understanding of human beings has expanded. I do have a genuine inclination towards helping others and I am very sensitive to other people’s emotions. I also have the utmost respect for each individual’s environment and choices that I am working with and I adjust my approach and care plan accordingly. I am a non-judgemental person, it is part of my character, this helps me immensely in my life and my work. Wholeheartedly helping fellow human beings, treating each person as an individual who deserves respect and care brings me personal growth and satisfaction. I have the patience and determination required to become a very dedicated student and Social Worker. I am open minded going into this program that my areas of interest may change as I learn more and gain experience but I think that working with Adults and Adolescences that are living with mental health issues, homelessness, substance abuse are the individuals that I can easily see myself working with.
