Making disciples who make disciples
‘Come, follow me, I will make you fishers of men.’
What is “Discipleship”?
What Scriptures come to mind when thinking of “mature” disciples?
Thinking of the 12, what sayings are recorded that show immaturity?
What Scriptures come to mind when thinking “How do we “Make Disciples?”
First… A Lesson from King David
David conferred with each of his officers, the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds. 2 He then said to the whole assembly of Israel, ‘If it seems good to you and if it is the will of the Lord our God, let us send word far and wide to the rest of our people throughout the territories of Israel, and also to the priests and Levites who are with them in their towns and pasture-lands, to come and join us. 3 Let us bring the ark of our God back to us, for we did not enquire of[

1 Sam 4:11 The ark of God was captured
5:6 …the people of Ashdod said, ‘The ark of the god of Israel must not stay here with us, because his hand is heavy on us and on Dagon our god.’ (same for Gath and Ekron)
6:7 ‘Now then, get a new cart ready
6:13 Now the people of Beth Shemesh were harvesting their wheat in the valley, and when they looked up and saw the ark, they rejoiced at the sight.
1 Chr 13:7 They moved the ark of God from Abinadab’s house on a new cart, with Uzzah and Ahio guiding it.
That day, it didn’t end well…
1 Chr 13:9 When they came to the threshing-floor of Kidon, Uzzah reached out his hand to steady the ark, because the oxen stumbled. 10 The Lord’s anger burned against Uzzah, and he struck him down because he had put his hand on the ark. So he died there before God.
13:12 David was afraid of God that day and asked, ‘How can I ever bring the ark of God to me?’
Doing things God’s Way
King David didn’t move the Ark for three months
15:1 …he prepared a place for the ark of God and pitched a tent for it. 2 Then David said, ‘No one but the Levites may carry the ark of God, because the Lord chose them to carry the ark of the Lord and to minister before him for ever.’
They brought the ark of God and set it inside the tent that David had pitched for it, and they presented burnt offerings and fellowship offerings before God. 2 After David had finished sacrificing the burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord.
What Do We Learn From This?
If it seems good to you… it seemed right to all the people
But where did the idea of the new cart come from?
‘No one but the Levites may carry the ark of God, because the Lord chose them to carry the ark’
What ideas do we have that could mislead us?
1 Chr. 13:7 They moved the ark of God … on a new cart… 8 David and all the Israelites were celebrating with all their might before God, with songs and with harps, lyres, tambourines, cymbals and trumpets.
Amid the celebrations, did anyone know this was wrong?
How Does This Apply To Us As We Seek To Make Disciples?
What do you think David did in the three months before he tried again to move the Ark?
We can seek to understand what the Scriptures have to say:
How is The Gospel presented?
What response is expected?
Is change instant or is there a process?
Jn. 5:24 Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.
Now you’ve heard, believe and you won’t be judged, the end?
Can we say: whoever…believes 1. will not be judged 2. has crossed over from death to life?
Lk. 8:13 Those on the rocky ground are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away.
Rom. 6:13 Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness.
1 Jn. 3:14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other. Anyone who does not love remains in death.
A process of Spiritual Growth? (Examples from thoughts by Putman/Willis) “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”
As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. 3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh[

Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.
I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
1 Corinthians 3
Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly—mere infants in Christ.
…become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.
So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, 7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.
1 Corinthians 14
20 Brothers and sisters, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your thinking be adults.
3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
…we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.
… if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’
