We decided that the topic is hydro power.
We consider the degree of understanding of the topic, the success rate of the model, and whether the model can be recycled.

Step 2. Create Background Statement
What is hydropower and how & why it works:
Hydropower is power derived from the force of moving water. We use it in a lot of parts in our life. Hydropower plants capture the energy of falling water to generate electricity. A turbine can convert the kinetic energy of falling water into mechanical energy. After that a generator converts the mechanical energy from the turbine into electrical energy.So we can use the water to translate other kinds of energy like electricity.
There are four broad types of hydropowe r :
Run-of f -river hydropower: a facility that channels flowing water from a river through a canal or penstock to spin a turbine. Typically a run-o f f-river project will have little or no storage facility. Run-o f f-river provides a continuous supply of electricity (base load), with some flexibility of operation for daily fluctuations in demand through water flow that is regulated by the facility.
Pumped-storage hydropower: provides peak-load supply, harnessing water which is cycled between a lower and upper reservoir by pumps which use surplus energy from the system at times of low demand. When electricity demand is high, water is released back to the lower reservoir through turbines to produce electricity.
Offshore hydropower: a less established but growing group of technologies that use tidal currents or the power of waves to generate electricity from seawater .
Water is an inexhaustible, clean and renewable energy, but in order to effectively use of natural water, we need to be able to focus on the construction of artificial water drop and adjust the flow of hydraulic structures, such as dams, water diversion culvert and the like. Therefore, the project investment, long construction period, but high hydroelectric efficiency, low cost of electricity, the unit starts fast, easy to adjust. Due to the use of natural water, affected by natural conditions is large. Hydropower utilization of water resources id often an important part, and shipping, aquaculture, irrigation, flood control and water resources utilization system composed of tourism.
Disadvantages:1. Due to restrictions on the terrain can not build too much capacity it. Unit capacity of approximately 300MW.2. Long construction period, high construction costs.3. Because rivers or lakes located in areas vulnerable to natural disasters FengShui affect other water utilities. Power output susceptible to dry weather and rain.4. After the construction is not easy to increase capacity.5. Ecological destruction: less water dam increased erosion and changes in the river's impact on plants and animals and the like.6. Dams need immigration, large infrastructure investment.7. Downstream fertile alluvial soil due to erosion and reduction.
Three Gorges Dam “China’s Three Gorges Dam spanning the Yangtze River is the world’s largest hydro power station in terms of installed capacity with a maximum capacity of 22.5GW. The dam became fully functional on 4 July 2012 when the last of the 32 main turbines began production. The project is regarded as a historic feat of engineering for China and can be considered a turning point in the development of the domestic hydro power industry. Through the development of the project, the Chinese industry gained valuable technological capabilities through partnering with foreign supplier . ”
“Canada is the third largest generator of hydropower in the world, despite a much smaller population than other hydro giants such as China and Brazil. With an installed capacity of 77.6 GW, hydropower currently accounts for 63 per cent of the country’s power mix.”
Step 3. Research Solutions
Materials: Steel tube / plastic pipe
Disadvantages: complex, cumbersome, hard to build
Materials: Copper wire
Function: This system can imitate the hydropower and use water to make energy.
Advantages: ( It can repeat use.
( It is easy to make.
( The theory is easy to understand.
Disadvantages: ( The power that this system make is weak.
( It is hard to success.
( It needs Siphon Principle, but we do not know how this theory work..
Function: Use flowing water to hit the wind will,make it rotates and then drive the alternator to make electricity.
Advantages: Recycle materials, easy and simple to make.
Disadvantages: T he energy that provided is too low, and the efficiency is low too. Because it need s m uch water to make the wind m ill rotate , but after the energy pass to the alternators , i t is small.
How it works: The flowing water quickly push the windmill to r otates and that makes the plastic wire way rotates which makes the circular rotating table rotates. After that, the alternator will produce electricity because of those energy , s o the little small bulb will light.
Step 4. Design and Develop
Materials: Copper line
Conduit (wood or plastic)
Function: We use the hydroelectric generator's theory and siphon's principle to make it circulate.
How it works:
( We use water to punch the flabellum to make the coil turn round. Cut the magnetic induction line to turn on the light.
( The left water was collected in a bottle. Then we use a conduit. It use siphon's principle to put the water to the origin.
Step 5. Build a Model and Test
① Cut the disposable chopsticks into 8 groups of 4 stub bars.
② Stick each group of stub bars.
③ Stick 4 sticks of chopsticks together to form a stick.
④ Use gelatin sponge and super glue (502) to fix the stub bars on the stick.
⑤ Dismantle the hand shank of a hand generator.
⑥ Stick the bar to the shaft of hand generator where the hand shank connected the hand generator.
⑦ Connect the leads and a small bulb to the generator.
⑧ Connect the water pipe to the tap.
⑨ Turn on the tap and use the water pipe to lash the bars.
⑩ Observe whether the small bulb light.
( When the water lashes the bars which is to replace the hand shank, the bars will rotate fast and then drive the generator to generate electricity which is to light the small bulb. )

Step 6. Redesign
We found that the bars were stuck not that tight to bear the strength that water lashes, so we stuck the two bars together to form one tight bar. Same as bars, the stick was easy to drop out from the generator, so we cut 3 cm stick off then use electric drill to make a pinhole at the top of the stick to connect the generator.
