S7L4e - Describe the characteristics of Earth’s major terrestrial biomes, (tropical rain forest, savannah, temperate, desert, taiga, tundra, and mountain) and aquatic communities (fresh water, estuaries, and marine).
The biome mural project gives students the opportunity to research in depth into a biome, including the plants and animals that live there. They must include the common and scientific name of five plants and five animals, and the images on the biome must be appropriate for that biome. Once complete, students do several activities where they explore all of the biomes using their classmates’ murals, including identifying climate, abiotic and biotic factors, herbivores, carnivores, omnivores, and producers. They must also identify various symbiotic relationships among the organisms, and make a food web with the plants and animals of a biome other than their own. Groups create a “Survival” scenario that includes what survivors would need to survive in a remote location in each biome. The environmental concerns of all biomes will be explored.
In groups of 4, students paint a mural of a ______________________ biome. Include five animals and five plants that are found in the biome, along with their common and scientific names. All biotic and abiotic factors of your biome must represent that biome. The entire paper should be covered with paint.
