Step 1: Look at the photo you have chosen. Write why you are drawn to the photo along with your initial reaction to it.
I am drawn to the photo because it shows how the young people in the Philippines are used to such tragic deaths every day.
My initial reaction to the photo was shock because of how calm and collected the young witnesses are while looking at the very bloody crime scene.
Step 2: Write or identify what you literally see in the photo.
In the photo I see a group of four young people staring at a horrific crime scene that had happened earlier that night. Not only was the scene disturbing, but the young group of people and the two investigators looking at the crime scene had all the same look on their faces…nothing. It is normal for them to see these kinds of deaths daily.
Step 3: Place yourself in the scene. Describe the photo using sensory details.
The street is wet from the rain and humid atmosphere but, it also is covered in blood from a man dead on the street. The four witnesses standing on the side look at the crime scene as if it’s a usual boring day at school. Two investigators stand next to the body, looking down at the man trying to figure out what happened.
Step 4: Analyze the photo using the elements of photography such as lighting, angle, perspective, and so on. You may choose to do a little research on elements of photography to aid you on this step.
Step 5: Using the information above, write a descriptive paragraph introducing your photo using imagery to tell the photo’s story in a way that appeals to the reader’s emotion as displayed in the opening paragraph of The Falling Man, and the Furgeson model shown in class.
The once peaceful night had turned to a more terrifying one in the Philippines. The trashy street was stained with a young man’s blood as he laid alongside the curb as if sleeping without a care in the world. The witnesses stand nearby peering at the gory crime scene a few feet in front of them. The dirty street got even nastier that night as another life was taken from this planet.
