Date, Time, & Location:
Tuesday December 13th 4pm-5pm
Redwood wealth management 11175 Cicero Dr, Alpharetta
Activity: I met with my facilitator, Shawn, and discussed how to start my product
Commentary: We talked about various subjects related to business and finance including stock vs. bond and why you invest in one or the other. I learned about which stocks I plan to invest and track and how to compare them to an index.
Total Time Thus Far: 1hr
Tuesday January 10th 12pm-1pm
Activity: Getting started
Commentary: I researched and learned about stock investing. I started a finance simulation in which I use fake money to invest and track. I also picked out which stocks I wanted to start with.
Total Time Thus Far: 2hrs
Tuesday January 24th 4pm-5pm
Activity: Getting familiar with the program I will use
Commentary: To conduct this simulation I will be using Yahoo Finance. I have never used this website before so understanding how to use it is an important step. I learned how to search for specific stocks using their ticker symbols and how to access information such as their summary, statistics, holders, and historical data. This will be useful in deciding if it a good idea to purchase, sell, or hold onto stocks.
Total Time Thus Far: 3hrs
Tuesday February 7th 8:00 am-10:am
Activity: Revision and discussion
Commentary: Using Yahoo Finance I revised my stock picks to include a wide range of different companies within the S&P 500 index. I also read an article about the different indexes. This included information like the number of stocks in each index, the type of companies, how they’re calculated, and their advantages and disadvantages.
I also asked my facilitator, Shawn, questions I had encountered about the market over the past weeks. We discussed topics including quarterly earnings, presidential influence, how much I should invest, gold, what index I should use, stock splits, and brick and mortar vs. online companies.
Total Time Thus Far: 6hrs
Wednesday February 8th 5pm-7:30pm
Commentary: After I was comfortable with the stocks I had picked I was ready to invest. I input the closing price for February 7th and decided how much money to put into what companies. I limited myself to $500,000 in total investments so I could see results quicker. After investing I recorded information such as what stock and how many shares into a notebook.
Next I started comparing my portfolio to certain indexes. I looked at daily and weekly percent gains to see if I was doing better or worse than the market as a whole.
Total Time Thus Far: 8.5hrs
Tuesday March 7th 4pm-5pm
Activity: Performance report
Commentary: At a previous meeting with my facilitator I was shown a performance report of one of his clients. I researched and tried to recreate what I had seen but despite having most of the information needed I did not know the best way to present it.
Total Time Thus Far: 9.5hrs
Wednesday March 8th 4-5pm Home
Activity: 4 weeks update
Commentary: I recorded all my stock prices after 4 weeks. I had to calculate by hand the total portfolio value and percent gain or lose. My first attempt was wrong but I managed to get the right percent gain with some math. I then compared my gain of 4 weeks to the S&P 500s 4 week gain.
Total Time Thus Far: 10.5hrs
Monday March 13th 4pm-5pm
Activity: Meeting and questions
Commentary: I met with my facilitator and asked him more questions about the market and finance. These included the New York Stock Exchange, futures, bull vs. bear market, swing and day trading, penny and cyclical stocks, effect of the holidays, buying and selling process, and when to keep or sell your stocks. I also asked him the best way to conduct a performance report.
Total Time Thus Far: 11.5hrs
Tuesday April 4th 4-5pm Home
Activity: 8 weeks update
Commentary: I repeated the same calculations from my 4 weeks update and again compared the percent gain to the S&P 500s percent gain after 8 weeks.
Total Time Thus Far: 12.5hrs
Monday April 10th 5-7:30pm
Activity: pictures and presentation

Total Time Thus Far: 15hrs
