Senior Capstone Career Project - Product Work Log
Name: Cara Werner
Product: A Comic Book
Date, Time, & Location:
Activity: My project facilitator and I facetimed for awhile. We spoke on
ideas and characters in the comic.
Commentary: I had to change around some background story around for a specific character in the book, which later developed into a crucial change in
the role that character plays. He told me that it'd be easier to transfer art
from unlined paper to the computer, so I will be using unlined paper and transferring the art to a computer.
Time Spent: 44 minutes and 28 seconds exact.
Total Time Thus Far: 44 minutes and 28 seconds exact.
Cherokee High School
Activity: Carsten and I spoke back and forth, showing each other our works.
He was coaching me and telling me that I needed to do quick little sketches
in order to make the best work.
Commentary: I learned that I can't just draw something right off the bat
and keep it as the final version, even in art. Even though I have some pretty
great skills, nothing is perfect unless it is truly worked upon. I learned to not
have exclusive spikes of creativity. I also learned that I should use pencils
before inking it all out.
Time Spent: 1 hour and 51 minutes exact.
Total Time Thus Far: 3 hours and 15 minutes.
Date, Time, & Location:
Activity: Over gmail, Carsten had asked, the day prior, for all of the work I
had done (4 pages of summary). I ended up not being able to send it all to
him that night, so I sent it all to him the next night. I am awaiting his notes
Commentary: He told me that if I seriously wanted to make this project
work, I'd have to make it a priority. That is duly noted. I will definitely be
spending more time with this thing, because it means alot to put my own
work out there. And someone is being so kind enough as to help me achieve
this dream. It will not be taken for granted.
Time Spent: 1 hour and 9 minutes approx.
Total Time Thus Far: 4 hours and 20 minutes.
December 1st, 2016
Activity: Once again, over gmail, I gave an in depth explanation to Carsten about
certain ideas I've got for the storyline and heavy descriptions on the characters
and their aspects. He and I went back and forth for awhile, apparently ending at
1:22 am, and I ended up giving him about 3 or 4 pages worth
the story. He finished the conversation with a promise that he'd give me notes
and his opinion on it all.
Commentary: I'm figuring out that it is so much easier to plan things on your
own. I realize that you'd be better off with someone wo knows more about the
area of interest than you, just for a net, but all in all, I'd be much more
inclined to do something on my own for some reason. During the editing
phase, I can see how an expert would be useful.
Time Spent: Overall 9 hours, but I will cut it down to 3.03 hrs.
Total Time Spent Thus Far: 8.43 hrs approx.
December 7th, 2016
Activity: Essentially I got his notes during these short hours. We both explained
That we at work during the first and last messages. In the last message Carsten
Had attached a pretty stylish PDF of his notes.
Commentary: Juggling a job and senior project is very hard and I have
Been very tired switching between both focuses. All the better,
I've got to handle another responsibility of acting and practicing lines for Theater.
Time Spent: Overall approx/. 3.12 hrs; cut to 25 minutes, since nothing too progressive happened on my part.
Total Time Spent Thus Far: 9.08 hrs approx.
December 8th, 2016
10:13 am ((I looked back on it
Later that night/ 9:34pm-9:55pm))
(I received the email at school/ My Home)
Activity: This very short happening occurred, and Carsten only asked if I had
seen or looked at his notes. I looked over his notes and tossed them around in
my head. I let him now that I saw his notes. Only later that month did I ask about
something that had confused me.
Commentary: I hate feeling the procrastination consume me. It's as if I don't desire to
do any of this because I'm being forced to do it. Weird.
Time Spent: 21 minutes
Total Time Spent Thus Far: 9.29 hrs approx.
January 28th, 2017
My Grandmother's home
Activity: I roughed out the first few panels of the comic and figured that I have much more headshots than anything else, so I'd definitely be taking the background and surroundings into more context.
Commentary: I have always taken backgrounds and little extra details, prop, etc. for granted. I never really paid any attention unless they were breathtaking or vitally important. I realize that a lot of the background helps the reader out with the tone, and is extraordinary if done right.
Time Spent: 15 minutes approx.
Total Time Spent Thus Far: 9.44 hrs. approx.
January 30th, 2017
My best friend's home.
Activity: I researched and sketched out inspiration for the ghosts of the story, as well as different fears that many people have and different flows of the way comic panels are drawn in consideration for the reader's comfort and entertainment.
Commentary: Realizing that people actually have a phobia for belly buttons was surely surprising. But I also found out that a lot of people are afraid of deformation of a basic human husk. For example, an old woman with a dislocated jaw toddling after you, or maggots crawling from your eye sockets. I came up with the end question, what if there was one ghost the crew was after, and everyone in town thought that this ghoul was, in fact, many phantoms? Maybe a single ghost can be the root cause of all of Nolander's citizens. Kind of like Pennywise, in a way.
Time spent: 2.07 hrs.
Total time spent thus far: 11.51 hrs. approx.
February 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 2017
Asked each one of my teachers each period.
Add on 5 minutes to the time, they weren't long talks.
Cherokee High School
Activity: I have asked each teacher what a physical embodiment of their fear would look like.
Commentary: They're all afraid of death and not too fond of spiders. Speaking with Mr. Woodward was the longest (and most helpful) talk I had with any of the teachers. He went on about dreams and asked me about what some of my fears are. If I want to stick to the whole one monster to destroy Nolander idea, it's gonna heave to be seriously worked on. I like more than one ghost.
Time Spent: 5 minutes, at most.
Total time spent thus far: 11.56 hrs. Approx.
February 23rd, 2017
Activity: I've written more of the story, overcoming the writer's block I had had for awhile.
Commentary: Focus is really kicking my rear. I'm getting worried about the 5 hours I have to record with Carsten. I know that these hours will have to be recorded over facetime, because it's definitely not going to happen in person. I guess that's my bad for choosing a facilitator who lives awhile away. I despise being forced to record every step I take. It takes more time away and deters me from actually working on the product. I assume I will have to learn to deal with that, though. Anyway, currently in the story, Ken has awaken to an silent, nearly empty home, as Cepherus is the only other body in the home. Ken is waking up and finds it strange that there is no burnt breakfast on her nightstand, which is unusual. She alerts Cepherus and he ends up lying about Virgyl's whereabouts. Kentucky soon finds this out and lights into Cepherus, telling him that he's a liar by omission, that he is selfishly avoiding the morally righteous decision, and that she is going to rescue her father and uncle, who have definitely gone to detain or kill Flint Waltz. He has been living in the warehouse where Virgyl took Cepherus and Kentucky to train for the first time. Cepherus tells Kentucky that she shouldn't go after them, they will be fine, but Kentucky persists aggressively, thus urging Ceph to tag along.
Time Spent: 35 minutes
Total time spent thus far: 12.47 hrs. Approx.
Activity: After taking a break on the 23rd, I wrote more story. This is the bulk of the project.
Commentary: This is the point of the story that holds the information of how Kentucky finds out WHERE Virgyl and Ross are, and it is also where Kentucky first yells at Cepherus and the audience first sees Virgyl's room. Really it's just more body of the story.
Time Spent: 12 minutes
Total time spent thus far: 12.49 hrs. Approx.
March 7th, 2017
11:45 am- 12:15 pm
Commentary: Cepherus and Kentucky have gotten in the car that Virgyl left in the driveway (Ross had come to pick him up way earlier that morning), and they begin driving to 4423 Trickum Court (the warehouse). Kentucky goes to accuse Ceph of being in the wrong place, and then she sees the street sign and shuts up. Ideologies and morals rise here when Kentucky starts getting on Cepherus' case. Controversial ideas of how one is considered family if they are not blood relatives, trust, loyalty, selfish vs selfless, and general morally conscious decisions are brought up in the conversation Kentucky and Cepherus have on the way to this ultimate showdown, unbeknownst to the audience. Soon will be the end of writing and the artistry will arise.
Time Spent: 20 minutes
Total time spent thus far: 13.09 hrs. Approx.
Activity: I was looking up a map of Pennsylvania because that is where the story is located. I pondered if Pittsburgh would be a good relative location of the entire story. I ended up settling the story in a fictional town just outside of Pittsburgh (Nolander), and placed Ross and The Agency on the edge of Pittsburgh. The warehouse on Trickum Court is also a fictional place near the mid point of Pittsburgh and Nolander.
Commentary: I remember that I set the exact location of Nolander once, and that I had even written it down in a notebook. The notebook is long gone and I can't recall where I had set the town. This isn't necessarily a difficult part of the process or anything, it's actually helped me learn a bit of the geography of Pennsylvania. On another note, I feel that it is necessary to integrate morals and ideologies into a story rather than just for entertainment purposes. In my stories, I always want to spread some sort of knowledge that could input wonder or active thought into the minds of my readers.
Time Spent: 14 minutes
Total time spent thus far: 13.23 hrs. Approx.
April 3rd, 2017
1:50 pm-1:30 am (April 4th, 2017)
Activity: I spoke with Carsten for a total of approximately 15 minutes and then began to pencil everything in a composition notebook.
Commentary: I did exactly what I said I wouldn't do, and I procrastinated even more. Paying for it now is seriously letting itself be known, and the bite really stings. I know what not to do in the future. If you procrastinate, ya gotta give up sleep for some good work.
Time Spent: 12 hrs, 20 minutes.
Total time spent thus far: 25.43 hrs. Approx.
April 4th, 2017
Activity: I penciled out more planning.
Commentary: From here on out, I did not write the specific times down, but I can guarantee that I worked 5+ hours from this log on, Sooner or later I got tired of drawing in a composition book, and though that it was a waste of my time, so I ended up fleshing final stages out in the actual book I will be presenting. I regret every second of procrastination I committed.
Time Spent: 5.26 hrs.
Total time spent thus far: 31.09 hrs. Approx.
April 7th, 2017
Activity: I drew finalizations into what will be the final product. I used the composition notebook as reference for the first few panels.
Commentary: I ended up using my common sense and drawing what needed to be drawn into the finalized papers because I'd be wasting time any other way.
Time Spent: 2.09 hrs.
Total time spent thus far: 33.18 hrs. Approx.
April 8th, 2017
Activity: From here on out, it's just drawing.
Commentary: My back hurts pretty bad, and so do my shoulders. I still regret procrastinating and I'm actually mad at myself.
Time Spent: 8.15 hrs.
Total Time Spent thus far: 41.33 hrs. Approx.
April 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 2017
All these days I started around 6:15 pm and worked all the way till 12 am the next morning.
Activity: I've been working on this all the chances I get. At this point, I am completely alright with giving up sleep for this.
Commentary: It comes to a point to where you're just numb to the lack of sleep and if you fill yourself up with coffee, you're fine. Every morning I wake up, I feel like a disoriented bumblebee. I'm really well adjusted to 5 hours of sleep, though, so It's all good.
Time Spent: Accumulated time from these 4 days: 21.08 hrs.
Total Time Spent thus far: 62.41 hrs. Approx.lfish vs selfless, and general morally conscious decisions are brought up in the conversation Kentucky and Cepherus have on the way to this ultimate showdown, unbeknownst to the audience. Soon will be the end of writing and the artistry will arise.
