My name is Katie Horlock and I plan to attend Auburn University to pursue my dream career as a veterinarian. My senior project consists of a “walk” to raise awareness for childhood cancer. It is going to be in honor of Lindsay Simmons, an Etowah student who passed away from Leukemia last year. I am going to tie my future career into the walk by letting walkers bring their dog(s). There will be different paths and start times for walkers with and without their dog(s). There will be options to donate to both the Rally Foundation (for childhood cancer research) and The Cherokee County Humane Society (for homeless pets). Therefore, awareness will be raised for both important groups.
My research paper focused on the fact that no matter where we are in life, we all have the ability to decrease the amount of homeless pets in our community. If we cannot adopt, we can foster. If we cannot foster, we can donate. If we cannot donate, we can volunteer. I learned that we have the possibility to significantly decrease homeless pets in our community if we all work together. In order for this to happen, we have to advertise, protest, and publicly speak about the issues and the danger of adopting from pet stores. My paper states the impact that animals of all kinds have on our community. Once we all work together to complete these things, we can change the world for the better.
By containing the dog walking into my senior project, the walk will be relating back to animals and my future career as a veterinarian. While walkers are learning about childhood cancer, they are also learning about the importance of rescuing pets in our community. While the walkers also have an option to donate, they are learning about the purpose of the humane society. The amount of homeless pets brought into a veterinarian’s office effects their job greatly. Therefore, this walk will raise awareness to these pets in need of a forever home. The main obstacle in this project is how to relate becoming a veterinarian into my walk. Once I started with one idea, it lead to another and became much easier to plan.
During this project and the research, I learned that I am capable of more than I give myself credit for. I learned that I have the ability to raise awareness for things that I am passionate about. Eventually, I will have an effect on others around me and even the world. As someone who considers myself shy in new situations, I was able to come out of my shell and lead others. I learned that I could accomplish whatever I put my mind to.
Overall, my senior project was a good learning experience. While at times it may have been stressful, I was able to accomplish anything I put my mind to. I am grateful to be a part of a great project. Thank you very much for your time.
