Senior Capstone Career Project - Product Work Log
Name: Brandy Juarez-Lopez
Product: Dog Training
Saturday, 1/28/17, 10:00-3:05, 1015 Univeter Road
Canton, GA 30115:
Time Spent: 5 hours and 3 minutes
Activity: I went to the Cherokee County Animal Shelter once it opened to continue working with any available dogs. These past few months have been quite busy in the shelter. Many potential adopters have come in to see a favorite dog or cat they saw on the shelter’s Facebook or Petfinder.
Commentary: There were some new volunteers that were learning how to handle the dogs at the shelter before going on their own. They had to shadow Casey and Rachel, longtime volunteers, who also did their senior projects at the animal shelter. I also had to go through the same procedures that these volunteers had gone to. When training a dog (at the shelter), we only use signs and movements. This is to ensure that the dogs will have the knowledge and understanding of the tricks. We do not speak the instructions because of the possibility of their future family being multi-lingual.
Saturday, 4/8/17, 10:00- -2:00, 1015 Univeter Road
Time Spent: 4 hours
Activity: I went to the Cherokee County Animal Shelter a bit after it opened to continue working with any of the dogs available. There was an event being hosted at the senior care center next door, so we had to figure out a way to walk the dogs without intruding and looking after our dogs.
Date, Time, & Location: Thursday, 4/6/17, 11:00-4:40
Time Spent: 5 hours and 40 minutes
Activity: I walked dogs and socialized with the cats in the morning. My friends, one of them having previously trained and the other being there for the first time came help to socialize the dogs and cats. We also helped Casey take at least 4 of the dogs a bath. For one of the dogs she especially needed help, lifting him up in the tub.
Commentary: My friend is somewhat skittish, she likes animals but isn’t use to being so close to them. I know it takes time for people to warm up and be more comfortable to dogs so I let my friend stay beside me. She got nervous at one point and Jambo, a German Shepard at the shelter roughly 2 years old had started following her. When it comes to walking big dogs you have to have at least one other person to walk alongside them unless you have a handle of them. I had my friends with me just in case, we would be able to have things under control.

Time spent: 3 hours
Activity: Went into the kennel with Gracie and Peanut. I took my little brother, he had been wanting to come volunteer at the shelter for a long time. I finally took him under my supervision, he got to play with the cats. He had created a bond or comfort with a grey spunky kitten.
August 13, 10 AM- 5PM
Time spent: 6 hours and 30 minutes
I was trained on how to handle the dogs at the shelter. I learned how to properly open a kennel and how to “grip” the leash. I got to know areas of the shelter. I was shown what areas were for employees only.
